[00:00:14] [SPEAKER_05]: And welcome to Fandomentals, the podcast that explores pop culture one conversation at a

[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_05]: time. I am your host, Harley. Every episode I interview different people from around the

[00:00:25] [SPEAKER_05]: world to discuss a variety of topics within the world of pop culture. Thanks for joining

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_05]: me on this journey and I hope you enjoy the episode.

[00:00:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Welcome to the second episode of On The Stage at the ArcTanGent Festival. In this

[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_05]: episode, I'm joined by Urne, Every Hell and Brontide. Each of these bands was absolutely

[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_05]: fantastic to talk to, had a great time learning more about their experiences playing at festivals

[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_05]: and in the case of Every Hell, finding out how Will got on with his hunt for a toothbrush

[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_05]: at 2000 Trees. There's that and so much more to look forward to in this episode.

[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_05]: So let's just get to it. This is On The Stage at ArcTanGent with Urne, Every Hell

[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_05]: and Brontide.

[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_01]: So I got to play that and it was a mad experience. I enjoyed myself, I was still quite young

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_01]: in the first festival so I over enjoyed myself the night before. We got to our

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_01]: set and the set went really well and then Fozzie were playing after us. So there

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_01]: was me hungover walking backwards and then I got Chris Jericho giving me a hug saying

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_01]: what a good set I had and I was like, I don't know where I am right now but yeah,

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_01]: cool, I'm here for it. We'll take that. That's incredible experience. But like a really

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_01]: good first time experience and I like love Sonosphere as a festival. I really enjoyed

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_01]: myself and the fact that that was one of the last years it was around, well

[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_09]: I wish I was there for that. I think for me, just as a punter to go with watch,

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_09]: the first gig I went to was the Unholy Alliance tour, Slipknot Slayer,

[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_09]: Mastodon and Hammersmith. That's when the early gigs I remember festivals,

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_09]: it's all kind of become a blur now since we've been playing a lot. But I

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_09]: think maybe it was probably Sonosphere as well. When Metallica were playing,

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm sure of that. Yeah, that's all I can remember from my first long ago festival

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_05]: experience. Yeah. I mean that is wild. I think we're just trying to think who else

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_05]: told me that. I think it might have been the guys from Every Hell Mentions.

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay. Yeah. Yeah. So you probably cross paths at some point. More than that.

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. It is a shame because that's quite a beloved festival. A lot of people speak

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_01]: quite fondly of that. I think I ended up, actually sorry, it wasn't my first

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_01]: festival was Sonosphere and then I actually did the, I'd actually have another

[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_01]: band did the last ever Sonosphere. Really? Yeah. And that's the one festival

[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I've been to multiple times that I've actually had good experiences both

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_01]: times. Nice. Other festivals have been good experiences but I've always

[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_01]: had bad times as well. I mean so far this is my first ever ATG. Really? I

[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_01]: absolutely loved it until this rain started. I know. Yeah. It's gone off a

[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: little bit. Yeah. This is the problem, this is one of the things we've got

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: with, the only problem we've got with festivals in the UK. Yeah. We're

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_01]: beholden by our terrible, terrible weather. We are yeah. We never, we

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_05]: never know what we're gonna get. We soldier on. We soldier on. I want to

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_05]: know apart from obviously, yeah, I mean weather's not a factor here but

[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_05]: what do you guys enjoy about playing festivals? Like cause I know a

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_05]: lot of people listening might think, you know, being in the band, yeah

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_05]: going on the road, you know, playing with your favourite artists, that

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_05]: kind of thing but festivals are completely different right for bands.

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, what stands out to you guys? What makes you think, yeah,

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_09]: I want to play ATG for example. Yeah, a number of things. Well,

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_09]: first off, as you said, well it is like the travel of going to a

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_09]: new country, people who, or a country we've never played before.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_09]: Right. And then like you're getting people that have, know you, know

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_09]: your music and we never sort out until, I mean like write songs to be

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_09]: like, yeah, we can play this and so we can play that. We just write the

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_01]: music because we're the musicians. Last weekend we played a festival in

[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Romania. Wow. Okay. Overlooked by Brands Castle which is Vlad's

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Castle essentially. And like we're playing like completely different

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_01]: country, never, never been to. Yeah. Yeah. We did it. It's amazing.

[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_01]: That's incredible. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Sorry. I think we enjoy, we get

[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_01]: to be the nerds on the other side of things. Yes. So we get to watch

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_01]: the bands that we really like and go, yeah, okay, cool. Now we get

[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_01]: to see what's going on. And then like sitting there and we run into

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_01]: these people we looked up to for years as well. We'd have a chat

[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_01]: to them and get to share some, any of their knowledge.

[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_09]: We're like, we've got a dressing room which is like right next to

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_09]: like who, like whatever. It's like the people that we grew up

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_09]: listening to and it's like mad that they're in the same space.

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah. And we're doing our thing with them now. It's like what?

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_01]: It's also good as well because on a social side of things, you get

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_01]: to see so many of your friends that you've run into like randomly

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_01]: on the road that are not just a bit different at a festival.

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_01]: So you get to see all these people you haven't seen for

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_01]: ages. It's like, it's like the mates you make on holiday

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_01]: when you're a kid. Yeah. You never, you never, never go

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_01]: see him again. You get to see him again. Oh yeah. It's

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_05]: back to normal again. I've had someone describe it as like

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_05]: summer camp for nerds. Like it's like, yeah, you see all

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_09]: your friends. They're like, oh you. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_09]: It's going to be like, oh blah, blah, blah. It's going to be

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_09]: there. No way. They're going to be there. Yeah. Yeah. You

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_05]: catch up and get to hang out and have a beer and maybe

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_05]: hide from the rain or sit out in the sun or whatever.

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_05]: It's all good. It's all good. Yeah. I'm just curious

[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_05]: then on that note, what have been some of your favourite

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_05]: memories from playing at festivals? I mean, you've had

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_05]: a pretty good start with yeah, playing at Sonosphere and

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_05]: you know, having Chris Jericho come up to you must be like,

[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_05]: wait, what? But anything else like that that stands out

[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_09]: to you? There was one where me and Joe, I can't remember

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_09]: you there. This is like, yeah, with an old band though.

[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_09]: But we were at a festival download and Metallica were

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_09]: playing. See Metallica have their own area within the

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_09]: backstage. They're the headliners, they're Metallica.

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah. I feel Joe's got the nicer side of the story

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_09]: because Kirk Hammer comes out of the Metallica area. Yeah.

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_09]: And me and a few friends are just waiting there trying to

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_09]: get a picture with Kirk Hammer. Like, oh my God,

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_09]: Kirk Hammer is right there. But then Joe just comes

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_09]: along with his confidence. First of all, he comes up

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_09]: to us and he's like, give him some space guys.

[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_09]: It's Kirk Hammer, leave him alone.

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_09]: But in the meantime, he's getting his phone ready.

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_09]: Funny enough, Joe from Gajira comes walking along.

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_09]: Wow.

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_09]: And then high fives Kirk Hammer.

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_09]: Oh wow. And then in that gap, Joe managed to get

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_09]: a picture with Kirk Hammer whilst we've been waiting

[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_09]: there for about half an hour.

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_09]: Nuts. And then he gets a picture with Kirk Hammer

[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_09]: and he's like, ah, that's how you do it.

[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah. And then we're just like, ah,

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_09]: ****. And then we never saw Kirk Hammer again.

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_09]: But I mean, just to be there and have a look at

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_09]: Metallica, just to see him around is amazing.

[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_05]: So Joe, yeah, he just waited for Gajira Joe to slip

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_05]: in and distract him.

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Joe does help us out in ways like that.

[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_05]: We've all got that one friend that's just, yeah,

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_05]: they're just brave enough, aren't they?

[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Take a swing.

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, that's still cool, but to hang out and just...

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, you say that, there was so...

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_01]: When there was a week when I originally joined the band,

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: but I wasn't officially joined the band.

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_01]: And I had two shows, two festivals to do that week.

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And we did Summer Breeze in Germany.

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. Lovely.

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And we saw...

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_01]: It was a testament he was playing for Dave Lombardo at the time, right?

[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So we saw Dave Lombardo walking past and it's like,

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_01]: that's royalty walking past there.

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: And we didn't say anything at that time.

[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And then on the Sunday, we played Dynamo Fest.

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_05]: OK.

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I think we turned up on a Saturday.

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_01]: We had a few drinks beforehand and now and they're sitting there

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_01]: like Dave's just sitting there the whole time.

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, look, lads, I've got this.

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Off two beers.

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I've definitely got this.

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Fitted Dutch courage.

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's go.

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Just had that moment talked to.

[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_01]: And this is like someone I've watched for years.

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And to sit there and just talk about a little bit about the business,

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_01]: about what he's seen from the side of it and what we have.

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's remembering that we're on the different side of that.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, totally.

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_01]: That area now.

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's something to get your head around after a while.

[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Like through the Gajira shows that we open for,

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_01]: we sit there and watch Gajira and go, how did we open this evening?

[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_01]: How do we start this night?

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And they're playing now.

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't make any sense.

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, dude.

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a blessing.

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it totally is.

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_05]: And I bet you find doing those things right.

[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_05]: They're just people.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_05]: They're just guys like Mario and Joe are just dudes.

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, I'm sure I'm sure they made you feel very welcome.

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Very talented dudes.

[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh yeah, I love them.

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_05]: They're one of my favorite bands.

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, I know what he means.

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Like that could be the same.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_05]: I'd be like, oh.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_01]: So I was very lucky to play one of Mario's kits on the last album.

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And I remember sitting there flying stroking it, going, look,

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to hit you as well as the other band does.

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_01]: But I'll still treat you well.

[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry.

[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll look after you.

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_05]: I'll look after you.

[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_05]: People watching in the studio goes, are you all right?

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_05]: It's just this process.

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_05]: He's just warming up.

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Having a moment.

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Just having a moment.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: He's crying, Joe.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: He's crying.

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry.

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_01]: It's fine.

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, that's the things that snare has seen.

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_05]: I guess something else I'd like to ask people.

[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_05]: This is a very difficult question, so bear with me.

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_05]: OK.

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_05]: But if you guys have your own festival, I want to know,

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_05]: what's the festival called?

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_05]: And who are your three dream headliners?

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_05]: You can have any one you like, dead or alive.

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_05]: I told you it was a difficult question.

[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_05]: That is very difficult.

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Start with the name alone.

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_05]: I know, the name is tricky.

[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Then I've got an appreciation of really in-your-face

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_01]: European festival names like Bludgeon Fest.

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Just unnecessarily violent, just for no reason.

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Not because I'm there for it, but it just makes me laugh.

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it is.

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_00]: It's good.

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_09]: Bludgeon, yeah.

[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_09]: Funnily enough, well, talking about brutal names like that.

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_09]: And then you mentioned Summer Breeze earlier.

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_09]: And then I tell my family and friends and stuff,

[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_09]: like, yeah, we're playing a festival in Germany

[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_09]: called Summer Breeze, which is a metal festival.

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_09]: But it sounds nothing like it.

[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_09]: And it's like, what?

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_09]: Summer Breeze?

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_09]: He goes, oh, that's nice.

[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_05]: So you look at the poster and you go, ooh, OK.

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_05]: I can't read any of the logos.

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, perfect.

[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know about the name, but I know I would want the Pantera.

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.

[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Original Pantera.

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_09]: Like that video when they're in Moscow.

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_09]: And they play it to whatever it is.

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_09]: Just pure power of the groove.

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing like it.

[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Nothing like it.

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_01]: That's all.

[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's a good one.

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Straight off the back of my mouth award.

[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_05]: It's like, yeah.

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's that.

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I've got a massive thing for Tool as well.

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Mate, I love Tool.

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Did you catch him this year?

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't catch him this year.

[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_01]: The first time I ever got to see him

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_01]: was on the 10,000 Days Tour.

[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And it was a different experience.

[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I've never seen a live band like it.

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_05]: No, I saw them for the first time this year.

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_05]: And you're right.

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_05]: There's something oddly transcendent about Tool.

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Just their whole setup, the way they do it,

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_05]: it's just you sit there and you go like,

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_05]: I've been to so many shows, but I don't.

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_05]: My brain is like, no, this is completely new.

[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, I don't know what I'm seeing.

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And the maddest thing was they had massive support in them.

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And they made them look stupid.

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, how have you made that band look stupid?

[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and they're already insane.

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_01]: It's ridiculous.

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's wild.

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I couldn't believe it.

[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_05]: So that's pretty.

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_05]: So you've got Pantera and Tool.

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_05]: You've got two massive heavy hitters there.

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_09]: It's hard thinking of the ones that are like,

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_09]: well, Pantera, I'm around taking more.

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_09]: But I mean, like, how far can you go back?

[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_09]: That's back as far as you like.

[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_01]: It's dream shows, mate.

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Who going?

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_09]: It's almost like you're spoiled for choice now.

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_09]: It's like, who are you going?

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, whoever you're like, I think there's no wrong answer.

[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you know what?

[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to throw it out there as well.

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to plead against the grain.

[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_01]: The Eagles.

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, there he goes.

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_01]: But that, I can't remember what year it actually is.

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I know it's 1970s, but it's a live video of them

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_01]: performing, or live performance of them performing.

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Unreal.

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah.

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_01]: To have like pretty much every member in the band

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_01]: be a competent lead singer.

[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And then they come together and do

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_01]: the most ridiculous harmonies whilst doing

[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_01]: the job they're there for.

[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_01]: 100%.

[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_01]: That would be awesome.

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_01]: That's it, Pantera, Tool, and the Eagles.

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_01]: How about that for a mish-mash?

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'd go to that festival.

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Appalachian fist.

[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, Appalachian fist, yeah.

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Appalachian.

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_05]: It would be cool though, because yeah, you get absolutely

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_05]: hit in the face for Pantera on the Friday.

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Saturday, you're getting your mind blown by Tool.

[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_05]: And then Sunday, you're just chilling out with the Eagles.

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_05]: The Countdown, yeah.

[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_05]: The Countdown, yeah.

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_05]: That's a nice flow.

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_05]: It's a nice flow.

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_05]: I love it.

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Brilliant.

[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Guys, thank you so much for coming on the podcast.

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Thank you for having us.

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Thanks for having us.

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Hello, Toby, and welcome back to the Fundamental Podcast.

[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Hey, man.

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_05]: It's good seeing you.

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Hello, hello.

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Likewise, my friend.

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Likewise.

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Will, actually.

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Back in the field.

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_05]: My first question to you, Will, is a follow-up question

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_05]: from our last interview.

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Did you find a toothbrush at 2000?

[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, man.

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_05]: It was so glorious.

[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_08]: Watch the...

[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_08]: There was a...

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_08]: We put up a reel last week.

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_08]: Lovely.

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_08]: And I was saying that cleaning your teeth is better

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_08]: than getting laid.

[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_08]: That's clean enough.

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_08]: That's clean enough.

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_08]: It's fine.

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Given the distress that you were in not having a toothbrush,

[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_05]: I can believe it.

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_05]: It was too much.

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_08]: I just...

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah, I just forgot.

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_08]: I definitely brought my wash bag this time.

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_08]: Good.

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_08]: I have not forgotten.

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_08]: You're prepared.

[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah.

[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_08]: Good.

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_05]: And yourself, Toby, you're prepared.

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_05]: You've got your wash bag.

[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_07]: Yes, I thought I forgot my toothbrush, actually.

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_07]: Couldn't find it for hours on...

[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Terrible.

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_07]: ...Wednesday morning.

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_07]: Will knows that pain very well.

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_07]: But it just randomly fell out of my bag at some point

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_07]: and I was in happy days.

[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_07]: Clean most.

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_07]: Lovely.

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_07]: Love it.

[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, last time you were on Nice Chat.

[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Toby, I'll ask you the question.

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_05]: What was the first festival that you went to?

[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Will had a pretty good answer the last time.

[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, mine was...

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_07]: Mate, how old is that?

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_07]: I must have been like 12 and I went to Downloads.

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_07]: You went to Downloads?

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_07]: For one day, yeah.

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_07]: Amazing.

[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_07]: My best mate in school, his dad worked for a music publishing

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_07]: company or PR company, I think.

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_07]: So he used to do all the posters at festivals and stuff.

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_07]: Right.

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_07]: So he just got us in free and like, you know, guest list

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_07]: and stuff.

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_07]: So yeah, I went to that.

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_07]: Incredible.

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_07]: Three years in a row.

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_07]: Three years in a row.

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_07]: That's fantastic.

[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_07]: And I went three times to Leeds Fest.

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_07]: Did you?

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_07]: In teenager.

[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_07]: I was an absolute reprobate.

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_07]: Wow, nice.

[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_07]: And then went to 2003s in 2012 for the first time

[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_07]: and have not stopped going to the air or ArcTangent

[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_05]: ever since.

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Amazing.

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_05]: And what about the first one you got to play at then?

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Because you've been here in quite a few bands.

[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_07]: Yes, the first festival I ever played was ArcTangent.

[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_07]: Really?

[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_07]: The first year, 2013.

[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_07]: Good grief.

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_07]: My band, Memory of Elephants, were the first bands

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_07]: that played on the first day of the first ArcTangent.

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_07]: Wow.

[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_07]: How did that go?

[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_07]: First ever note that rang out at ArcTangent was me.

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_07]: You're with royalty.

[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I am with royalty.

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_05]: You're with royalty today.

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_05]: I wouldn't say that.

[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm assuming they've got like a special throne for you

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_05]: set up somewhere here.

[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_05]: I made a beer.

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Made a beer.

[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, man.

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Imagine.

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Imagine.

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_08]: Actually, we kind of made that last year

[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_08]: with the skin failure set.

[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_08]: Do you remember all the beer?

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, yeah.

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_07]: OK.

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, there was a lot of beer last year.

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_05]: A lot of beer.

[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Interesting.

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Was that out of cans and boxes?

[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_08]: Because Toby was part of the packed down crew

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_08]: last year as well.

[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_08]: There was all the un-drunk studio lagers.

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_07]: Those have gone off pissed and heard.

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_07]: There was like a whole lorry full of it.

[00:17:12] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_07]: So they got a great picture of him

[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_07]: lying on a lorry full of beer, which is his throne.

[00:17:18] [SPEAKER_05]: That's what I'm saying.

[00:17:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_05]: But how does that go unnoticed at a festival?

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_05]: That feels like someone just hit that truck at the back.

[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_05]: I think it was like, yeah, a pallet definitely

[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_05]: got forgotten about.

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_07]: I don't know, two years later it was like,

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_07]: ah, we can't give this to anyone now.

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, OK.

[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_07]: Just literally pouring it out and crying over every can.

[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Remarkable.

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Remarkable.

[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, last time we were chatting,

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, Will, you were saying you

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_05]: got to play Sonisphere and do all these amazing experiences.

[00:17:45] [SPEAKER_05]: I was asking someone earlier, what's

[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_05]: been some of one of your favorite surprises

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_05]: at a festival?

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know, any moment where maybe you

[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_05]: discover a band that you previously had written off

[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_05]: or didn't know anything about, or just something

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_05]: like finding a lorry full of beer.

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_05]: That feels like a good surprise.

[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, that's a great question.

[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_08]: Stuff like that.

[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_08]: I've got a really weird answer to that actually.

[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_08]: Go for it.

[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah, greatest musical turnaround for me.

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_08]: I just, still kind of controversial,

[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_08]: because I just hated everything that he did online.

[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_08]: But a few years ago, I did Love Supreme Jazz Festival.

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_08]: And I'm like a pretty jazz guy.

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_08]: Like, I don't like poppy jazz, really.

[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_08]: I like a bit of a backbeat kind of hip hop stuff,

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_08]: like that's as far as I go.

[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_08]: But he's like a super genius.

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_08]: And he was touring at the time his first album

[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_08]: in my room.

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_08]: This is before he went Stratospheric

[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_08]: and started working with everyone.

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_08]: But I was like, yeah, let's go and check this out

[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_08]: and laugh at it, because I know that I'm not going to like it.

[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_08]: And I was just totally blown away by him live.

[00:19:04] [SPEAKER_08]: And he was just so genuinely humble.

[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_08]: Because I've always got a problem

[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_08]: with people that are like, when it's just impressive.

[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_08]: You know what I'm saying?

[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_08]: When it's like, oh, I go and see them.

[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_08]: They're really techers.

[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_08]: And he can play all the instruments.

[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_08]: But he would build the tune up himself.

[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_08]: But it was so good that I went in there,

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_08]: arms folded, full music, like, I hate you.

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_08]: And then I left at the end of the set,

[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_08]: kind of with a tear in my eye.

[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_08]: That was really moving, beautiful.

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_08]: And he was just so good.

[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_08]: And then again, just on records, all the stuff

[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_08]: that he's put out since, I'm like, eh.

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_08]: Actually, there was one single last year

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_08]: that was amazing.

[00:19:58] [SPEAKER_08]: But that was a big turnaround at a festival for me,

[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_08]: for sure, Jacob Collier.

[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah.

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_05]: There's something about that, though, isn't there?

[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_05]: I suppose with some bands, it's just a case of,

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_05]: it's better live.

[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, it's hard to catch the live sound

[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_05]: that you put on a record and you go,

[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_05]: that's not quite, I don't know why,

[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_05]: it's not quite the same.

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_05]: But that's an awesome experience.

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_05]: How about yourself, Toby?

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_05]: You've had any sort of turnarounds or any surprises?

[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_07]: Loads, actually.

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_07]: We have been to Primavera Festival in Barcelona

[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_07]: quite a lot.

[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_07]: Wow, OK.

[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_07]: And that lineup is always ridiculously diverse

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_07]: and varied.

[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_07]: I think the first year we went,

[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_07]: we saw Bon Iver, and then we saw Gajira,

[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_07]: and then we saw Bad Bad Not Good,

[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_07]: and then we saw Sumac or something.

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_07]: It was just crazy.

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_07]: Sumac?

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, it's like mental.

[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_07]: After that?

[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah, absolutely mental.

[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_07]: What?

[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_07]: It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_07]: But one of the last times we went a few years ago,

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_07]: they kind of changed the whole vibe of it

[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_07]: and they went super pop-driven lineup.

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_05]: OK.

[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_07]: And I was a bit annoyed

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_07]: because I've already bought my ticket

[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_07]: and then that's the lineup.

[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_07]: I was like,

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_07]: I don't care about any of these bands, man.

[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_07]: I felt like, I was pretty annoyed,

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_07]: but I was like,

[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_07]: just spent 200 quid on these tickets,

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_07]: so we're going to have to go.

[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_07]: We went a lot and I watched so much pop music.

[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_07]: Turns out I really like pop music.

[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Ah, yeah, of course you do.

[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_07]: I've seen Charli XCX was amazing.

[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_07]: I've seen Miley Cyrus was really good.

[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_07]: I bet, I bet.

[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_07]: Robin headline one of the nights.

[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_07]: That was one of the best things I've ever seen in my entire life.

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_07]: She is unbelievable.

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_07]: Lovely.

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_07]: She's incredible.

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_07]: Saw Megan Thee Stallion last year.

[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_07]: That was amazing.

[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, Primavera, if you ever get to go,

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_07]: go to Primavera.

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_07]: I've heard good things, yeah.

[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_07]: It's like no other festival in the world.

[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_05]: It's crazy.

[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Wow, I love it.

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_05]: That's something that, yeah,

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_05]: kind of comes up in a lot of our chats with people

[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_05]: is just this, this idea of discovering new music.

[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_05]: And like you said, I mean,

[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_05]: I was just talking with someone just a minute ago

[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_05]: about even this festival being quite open,

[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_05]: you know, like Trees last time we spoke and so.

[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_05]: The fact that, yeah,

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_05]: people who go to these kinds of festivals

[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_05]: are just here for music, full stop,

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_05]: you know, and they're quite open-minded.

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_05]: So I imagine for you guys,

[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_05]: and I was chatting to Will last time,

[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_05]: but I imagine for you as an artist,

[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_05]: it can be quite exciting

[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_05]: because you come to a festival,

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_05]: you think hopefully people are here to have a good time

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_05]: and check out every hell and, you know,

[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_05]: be a bit open and we can just throw ourselves at them

[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_05]: are 100% unfiltered and.

[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_07]: That's the great thing about playing festivals

[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_07]: is that chance to win new fans.

[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_07]: Because they guarantee a lot of people,

[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_07]: half people in the crowd

[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_07]: have like never heard of you before.

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_07]: Of course.

[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_07]: So it's like, sure it's a challenge

[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_07]: and it's a bit daunting,

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_07]: but it's exciting, I know,

[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_07]: trying to win those people over.

[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_07]: So it's good, man.

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_07]: I love playing festivals, love it.

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_07]: And especially this festival.

[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, me too.

[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_05]: That's really, really cool.

[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_05]: I love that.

[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm gonna throw you in the deep end now, Toby,

[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_05]: because Will gave me an answer to this question already,

[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_05]: but I wanna know if you're gonna have your own festival,

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_05]: what's it called and who are your three dream headlines?

[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_05]: You can have anybody you want.

[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, mate, okay.

[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_07]: I wanna go back on mine.

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_07]: Okay, well, all right.

[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_07]: Come back to me in a minute.

[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_07]: I will, all right.

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_07]: We could do redo, that's fine, that's fine.

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_07]: I don't know about name,

[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_07]: I'll have to think about that, but.

[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_07]: Three dream headliners.

[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm tempted to say Mogwai, but they're,

[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_07]: oh, Tangent have already been in with two of them.

[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_07]: Well, you can have them if you want,

[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_07]: that's usually your festival.

[00:23:18] [SPEAKER_07]: To be honest, I was,

[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, we're talking like Dead or Alive fans.

[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah, 100%, whatever you like.

[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_07]: Okay, so, I mean, I'm a huge Sonic Youth fan.

[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_07]: Wow, okay, yeah, yeah.

[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_07]: Just getting a chance to,

[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_07]: I never got a chance to see them back in the day.

[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_07]: Brilliant.

[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_07]: So they would be amazing.

[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_07]: Lovely.

[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_07]: Brilliant.

[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_07]: Wow, nice.

[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_07]: Curveball, love that.

[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_07]: That's really, really, really good.

[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_08]: I'm basically gonna do the same thing as 70s.

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_08]: Like, this is the thing,

[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_08]: I was in a very different mood at Trees.

[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_08]: That's fine.

[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_08]: Before, and now I'm like,

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_08]: okay, I'm gonna call it G Fest.

[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_08]: G Fest, okay.

[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_08]: Feel the, strap yourself in and feel the cheese.

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_08]: That'll be the tagline underneath.

[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_08]: Lovely.

[00:24:19] [SPEAKER_08]: I would have 1975, 1976 Led Zeppelin.

[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Led Zeppelin.

[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_08]: Headline Friday.

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Awesome.

[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_08]: Jimi Hendrix.

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_08]: Like, 65, 1965 like Machine Gun.

[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_08]: Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.

[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_08]: Like that era.

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_08]: Somehow take all the politics and,

[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_08]: so it doesn't have to be

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_08]: in the middle of a Vietnam War again,

[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_08]: but like, that Hendrix playing again.

[00:24:48] [SPEAKER_08]: And then this is a random curveball for the end.

[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_08]: Do it.

[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_08]: Third headliner is,

[00:24:55] [SPEAKER_08]: like, Chili Peppers.

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_08]: Okay, okay.

[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_08]: 1990 version of the Chili Peppers.

[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_08]: Like, sock wearing.

[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_08]: Yes.

[00:25:08] [SPEAKER_08]: Like, absolutely nuts.

[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_08]: They're still on all the drugs.

[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_08]: They're jumping around like lunatics.

[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_08]: Flee's naked.

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_08]: Flee's naked.

[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_08]: Cause they're a huge part of my musical soul

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_08]: and I always kind of forget how much they inspired me.

[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_08]: And I think those three,

[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_05]: I love that.

[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_08]: In those era would be like,

[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah.

[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_08]: Crazy, crazy good.

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_05]: I agree.

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_05]: And I love era specific answers as well.

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Cause yeah, that's the fun of the dream.

[00:25:37] [SPEAKER_05]: The dream guess is like,

[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_07]: I've just thought of loads more bands as well.

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_07]: And it's like,

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_07]: We can talk with people about it.

[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_07]: I might go home and like actually curate this festival.

[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_07]: So you're talking about 77.

[00:25:47] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm like, I do love the Eagles.

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, right.

[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_05]: That would be interesting.

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_05]: That would be amazing.

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_05]: That would be very interesting.

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Like as they've just brought out Hotel California

[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_05]: or something like that.

[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Not like old men Eagles.

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Back when they all had like mustaches.

[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Not we have divorces to pay tour.

[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Like we're doing this because we actually care.

[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_05]: That would be cool.

[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I liked the sound of that.

[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_05]: That's really awesome.

[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Awesome.

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_05]: I just swagger a bit more time.

[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_05]: So just curious who you guys looking forward

[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_05]: to seeing on the weekends?

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_05]: If you got anyone you want to check out.

[00:26:17] [SPEAKER_05]: We're about to go watch a band called Earn.

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes.

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_05]: I'll call them on later.

[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_08]: I'm very excited about that.

[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_08]: Nice.

[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_08]: John from Baroness is right there.

[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_08]: Oh yeah.

[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_08]: There we go.

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_08]: So those guys Baroness.

[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_08]: Very, very excited to see Baroness again.

[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_08]: It's been a long time.

[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_08]: Lovely.

[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_08]: Red Fang.

[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah. Red Fang, Baroness.

[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_08]: There's loads of mates bands playing.

[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_08]: Meshuggah.

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah.

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_08]: Delta Sleep.

[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah.

[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_08]: I'm interested to see Pliny.

[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh he's amazing.

[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_08]: I'm very interested.

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_08]: It's not usually my jam, but I think

[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_08]: I want to go in and like with an open mind.

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes.

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_08]: Because so many people love them.

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_08]: Oh, there's a real curve ball.

[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_08]: I think that's today's textures.

[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Ooh, okay.

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_08]: That are a massively seminal band.

[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_08]: Like they were the first European new gent Meshuggah band.

[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_08]: Like before the whole gent thing was a thing.

[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_08]: They'd been listening to Meshuggah since the 90s.

[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_08]: Yeah.

[00:27:16] [SPEAKER_08]: And they're Dutch and they did this record

[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_08]: called Drawing Circles.

[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Awesome.

[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_08]: And it's like so dope.

[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Awesome.

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Come join us.

[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Just dragging them over from Baroness.

[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's do it.

[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Amazing. Amazing.

[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Come say hello.

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Sorry guys.

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_05]: No, no.

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_05]: That's fine.

[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Do it.

[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Come chill.

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Come chill.

[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_00]: You can join in.

[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Testing, testing.

[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_05]: No, no you're fine.

[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Nice to meet you.

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Help yourself mate.

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Help yourself.

[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know what these are.

[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_05]: They're Mawans.

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Help yourself.

[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Awesome.

[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_05]: There you go.

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_08]: One of my heroes.

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_08]: That's very cool.

[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_08]: I'm gonna hang out a bit more.

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_07]: He's very tall.

[00:28:02] [SPEAKER_07]: He's very tall.

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_07]: He's very tall.

[00:28:04] [SPEAKER_07]: Amazing.

[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_07]: So yeah, I suppose better go and watch.

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_07]: Baroness later.

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I think you should now.

[00:28:10] [SPEAKER_05]: I think you'll notice if you weren't in the crowd.

[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Amazing.

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Guys, thank you so much for coming on the podcast.

[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Absolute pleasure.

[00:28:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Cheers.

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, thank you so much.

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Awesome, thank you.

[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Cheers.

[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Hello William, Tim and Nathan.

[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Welcome to the Founder Mentals podcast.

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Thank you so much for having us.

[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_05]: That's my pleasure.

[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_05]: So guys, my first question to you guys

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_05]: is what was the first festival

[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_05]: that you guys went to?

[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Do you remember?

[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, I remember very clearly.

[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I think we went together.

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, lovely.

[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_04]: It was Leeds Festival in 2001,

[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_04]: two, two isn't a one or two.

[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Around then.

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_04]: That was our kind of local festival

[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_04]: and I think we all begged our parents

[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_04]: to get us a ticket and we went after,

[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_04]: kind of year before GCSEs for me.

[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I was in GCSEs.

[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_04]: New which year before.

[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_04]: I was GCSE results and then on the train there.

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Celebrated my bang average grades.

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Carnage, absolute carnage.

[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_04]: One of the best weekends I've ever had.

[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_04]: So much fun.

[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_04]: What did you do?

[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Cause mine was, I was just,

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_03]: we must have had this conversation at some point

[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_03]: cause mine was also Leeds.

[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Nobody?

[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Mine was probably 2004.

[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But we were just talking about it

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_03]: in the van on the way over here.

[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_03]: How like just insane it is.

[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Like people were like,

[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_03]: all the bins were on fire for a start.

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And like the little gas canisters.

[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Jumping over them?

[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_03]: No, people throwing those into the bins.

[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh that's cool.

[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I knew.

[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_03]: It was nuts.

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_03]: It was just like,

[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_03]: there was like riot security just pushing people,

[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_03]: people throwing gas canisters into flaming bins.

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_03]: It was, I was like,

[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_03]: is this what music festivals are like?

[00:29:46] [SPEAKER_03]: It's sick.

[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I love them.

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm glad we made it to 2024.

[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it felt like there was a norm of just light rioting

[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_06]: on the last night.

[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Kind of last night, no rules.

[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it was.

[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, all Leeds festival.

[00:29:58] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't know it was all Leeds festival.

[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_04]: That's good.

[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Do you remember who was playing

[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_05]: or was it too much dodging fires and stuff?

[00:30:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I do.

[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I think we watched Metallica on the Friday night.

[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, lovely.

[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Didn't we?

[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, we watched Metallica the Friday night.

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I think Placebo played a few before, which I loved.

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_04]: They had the sunset set, which is perfect.

[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_04]: We watched, we went to the concrete jungle stage

[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_04]: and there was a lineup that was like,

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_04]: it was like Al Capone cheerio, Boyz Sets Fire.

[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my God.

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Movie life?

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Movie life, yeah.

[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Movie life.

[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_04]: There were so many great bands

[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_04]: and then we watched AFI

[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_04]: and I got knocked out, slam dancing.

[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_06]: And a broken nose.

[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_06]: We were all talking a big game

[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_06]: because it was, I think we're at a period

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_06]: where push mushing was evolving into slam dance.

[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_06]: And we were like, throw down

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_06]: and you got literally knocked out in the first song

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_06]: and we had to take you to the tent.

[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you were in 2004?

[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It was on there.

[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_03]: 2004, I think if I can remember.

[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Blood Brothers were.

[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, got paid to see them again.

[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Anything for that.

[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_03]: And then, it was quite a while ago.

[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a while ago.

[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Daphne and Celeste.

[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, was it the year they got booed?

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that was the year.

[00:31:10] [SPEAKER_05]: I think that cast came up already actually.

[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Is it really?

[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_05]: But if you're like running leads,

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_05]: that sort of thing has been an answer.

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_05]: And yeah, that era of certain bands

[00:31:18] [SPEAKER_05]: just not being welcome.

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, there was always one.

[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_06]: There's always one.

[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_05]: And you always felt for them.

[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_06]: You're like, oh, dude.

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Absolutely, God, it's awful.

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, now a few years later,

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_06]: you're just like.

[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, that was really mean.

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Do we do that for?

[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_05]: So I guess that leads me into my next question,

[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_05]: which is what about the first time you guys got to play?

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Do you remember the first festival you were booked at?

[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_05]: As Brontide?

[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, sure.

[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Was it Art Tangent or was it Trees?

[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Or was it Truck?

[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_06]: I think Truckfest may have been the first

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_06]: sort of outdoor one.

[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_06]: I think we'd done things like inner city ones before,

[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_06]: things like tram lines or like great escape type stuff.

[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_06]: But I want to say Truck was probably the first

[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_06]: because we did The Barn.

[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Nice.

[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Okay.

[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Which is, yeah.

[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I do find that, and this is,

[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_04]: I think why bringing it to Art Tangent here

[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_04]: is because I think what's so good about it

[00:32:11] [SPEAKER_04]: is that there are so, for a band like us,

[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_04]: which don't necessarily fall into a metal world,

[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_04]: don't necessarily fall into an emo world or a punk world

[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_04]: or anything or a math world.

[00:32:19] [SPEAKER_04]: There was no, there was nowhere really for us to go.

[00:32:21] [SPEAKER_04]: And that seemed to kind of go.

[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that that's when, you know,

[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_04]: when Trees came around and Art Tangent came around

[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_04]: and things like this,

[00:32:27] [SPEAKER_04]: it actually kind of gave a home

[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_04]: to a lot of bands like us.

[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_04]: So there weren't a huge amount of festivals

[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_04]: available to kind of play.

[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Fair point.

[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So we did Truck and I think when we came here,

[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_04]: it felt like, okay, finally there's a place

[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_04]: for like what we do.

[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Nice.

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Have you guys been here a couple of times then I imagine?

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_04]: We played the first Art Tangent 10 years ago.

[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Ooh wow.

[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_04]: When our last record came out 10 years ago as well.

[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, so it feels really good.

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's supposed to be a really nice

[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_05]: like full circle moment.

[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Absolutely that time, totally.

[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_05]: So what about some of your favorite memories?

[00:32:54] [SPEAKER_05]: What things stand out to you guys

[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_05]: from playing festivals?

[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Have you got anything?

[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I think Track Festival for me going back to that.

[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that being,

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and I think it was one of the first

[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_03]: like bigger outdoor ones we played.

[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Gotcha.

[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I remember coming off from that,

[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_03]: being blown away with the amount of people

[00:33:10] [SPEAKER_03]: that we played to.

[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And I was just like,

[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah, I couldn't believe it.

[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I think that was, yeah,

[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_03]: one of my favorite memories from the band.

[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's one of them.

[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Like if we went back now to have a look at the stage,

[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_03]: you'd be like, oh, it's this big.

[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_03]: But like in my mind it's like,

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know, pyramid stage, do you know what I mean?

[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:33:29] [SPEAKER_06]: It's just.

[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_06]: It was a literal cow shed.

[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_06]: It was a literal cow shed.

[00:33:33] [SPEAKER_06]: It didn't smell good.

[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_06]: It didn't smell good.

[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_06]: It did not smell good.

[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, once you've been, you know,

[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_06]: you've gone around and played 100 cap, 200 cap rooms,

[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_06]: right, it's all of a sudden that you're in there

[00:33:41] [SPEAKER_06]: and it just felt real.

[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_05]: I can imagine that.

[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_05]: It's like, yeah, suddenly I can see the horizon.

[00:33:47] [SPEAKER_05]: What's going on?

[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_05]: That's awesome.

[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_05]: That's really cool.

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_05]: And what a great one for your first one as well, right?

[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it was nice.

[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Welcome to the festival circuit.

[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Brilliant.

[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_05]: So something else I've been exploring with people

[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_05]: is like, is the appeal of playing festivals.

[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_05]: So I wonder if you guys, like as a band,

[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_05]: what do you enjoy?

[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, you kind of touched on something just a minute ago

[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_05]: with Art Tangent, like finding a scene.

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Is it sort of stuff like that that makes you think,

[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah, I want to go and play festivals?

[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.

[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_04]: There's that.

[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that also the ability for people

[00:34:15] [SPEAKER_04]: to come see you might necessarily not come to a show

[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_04]: or take the evening out to see it.

[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I think often your name gets thrown around

[00:34:20] [SPEAKER_04]: or a band's name gets thrown around.

[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like, oh, I've heard of them.

[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Let's go and check them out.

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_04]: And that can often lead, you know,

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_04]: from personal experience, not being in a band

[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_04]: to finding some of your favorite bands

[00:34:29] [SPEAKER_04]: because I wouldn't necessarily hear a name

[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_04]: and buy a ticket and go.

[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_04]: But if they're playing a festival, I might go and see it.

[00:34:35] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think we've made a lot of friends

[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_04]: and a lot of fans of people coming to see us

[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_04]: and then going, I saw you at this festival

[00:34:41] [SPEAKER_04]: and I followed your journey since,

[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_04]: which is really amazing.

[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_04]: That's awesome.

[00:34:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's, I think being a band,

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's it.

[00:34:47] [SPEAKER_04]: I think you obviously play bigger shows.

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Like we couldn't sell out 3,500 on our headline show

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_04]: or we can play it here.

[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Or we can do that.

[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's also fun just kind of seeing

[00:34:56] [SPEAKER_04]: that many people out and, you know,

[00:34:58] [SPEAKER_04]: playing to that many people.

[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, it's just an overall just great experience

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_04]: bumping into other bands, seeing friends.

[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a very communal thing.

[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_04]: I think when you're on the festival circuit

[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_04]: that you bump into a lot of the same people

[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_04]: and it's kind of like having weekly checkups of people.

[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_04]: So I think that's really, really fun too.

[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Awesome. Awesome. Love it.

[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_05]: The same for you guys, I guess then?

[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's always, it's school reunion vibes, isn't it?

[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_06]: Because you cross a lot of paths touring

[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_06]: and then it's like, hey, isn't this nice?

[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_06]: But exactly.

[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_06]: It's, anytime any owner asks me about my band,

[00:35:32] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, well, you know, we're quite niche.

[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think as you infer,

[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_06]: it's like you get to not be a niche so much

[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_06]: when you're at a festival

[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_06]: because you have this congregation of a larger community.

[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_06]: So it's always, yeah.

[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_06]: And this is the space for that is this festival

[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_06]: more so than anywhere else.

[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I love it. I love it.

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_05]: So guys, I've got a bit of a tricky question for you

[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_05]: for my last question,

[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_05]: but it's my favorite question to ask.

[00:35:57] [SPEAKER_05]: If you were to have your own festival,

[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_05]: I want to know what's it called

[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_05]: and who are your three dream headliners?

[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_05]: You have anyone you want, dead or alive.

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, it's called BronFest obviously.

[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, there we go.

[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_04]: That's awful, isn't it?

[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_04]: It's sad, yeah.

[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's really bad.

[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_04]: I take it.

[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Nah, do it, do it.

[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Lean into it.

[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Should we all pick a headline on Friday, Saturday, Sunday?

[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay. Yeah, do it, do it.

[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, this is tough.

[00:36:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I was about to pick something really safe.

[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.

[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_04]: But I'm not going to do that.

[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Nice. You're taking Friday?

[00:36:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll take Friday night

[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_04]: and I'm gonna have the Daft Punk will reform.

[00:36:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Ooh, interesting.

[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And they will do an amazing set

[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_04]: that doesn't include any songs off the last record.

[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Fair enough.

[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Even though that was good.

[00:36:36] [SPEAKER_04]: But they'll play all the deep cuts.

[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a deep cuts Daft Punk set

[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_04]: and I would just be so happy.

[00:36:41] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm doing Friday night Daft Punk.

[00:36:42] [SPEAKER_06]: High energy, kick the thing off.

[00:36:44] [SPEAKER_06]: I think I need more fran- yeah, it's more big.

[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. More every man.

[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Okay.

[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_06]: Is a hard question.

[00:36:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Um, I feel like for some reason,

[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_06]: my mind is going M83.

[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Ooh, okay. Nice.

[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_06]: Because I'm thinking like,

[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_06]: nobody doesn't like M83 to an extent

[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_06]: and they have the big that you kind of want.

[00:37:16] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know why that's where my mind's going.

[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Interesting, interesting.

[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm gonna change my mind after you've done yours.

[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_03]: When you close the festival, mate, what are you doing?

[00:37:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Sunday, I'm closing out the festival.

[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's gonna be a bit more relaxed,

[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_03]: a little bit triumphant, a little bit.

[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I love them and this is a big cop out.

[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a big cop out and I apologize.

[00:37:43] [SPEAKER_03]: No, do it, do it.

[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Mokwai would be the perfect closer to a festival.

[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Interesting.

[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I know they're playing tonight, but I adore that.

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_03]: They are so, so good.

[00:37:51] [SPEAKER_03]: They are.

[00:37:52] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think for a Sunday night closer,

[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I'd take that.

[00:37:55] [SPEAKER_03]: We did all have the option to pick our own band.

[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I know.

[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_04]: I think we should decide that we had the weekend off

[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_04]: by the sound of it.

[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, you can do,

[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_05]: but what I always say is like a sort of unwritten,

[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_05]: unspoken rule is if you're a band picking this,

[00:38:07] [SPEAKER_05]: you obviously get your own set.

[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, yeah.

[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_05]: So like your Thursday night, you're kicking it all off.

[00:38:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, that's fine.

[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't stop on Thursdays.

[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't stop on Thursdays.

[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Get it out of the way.

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_05]: If you want.

[00:38:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, but no, that's it.

[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_05]: And that's why I love hearing

[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_05]: it's a nice eclectic group of bands.

[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_05]: None of us said Daphne and Celeste.

[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I thought Blood Brothers

[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_05]: was gonna make a little sneaky appearance.

[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Down the middle.

[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_05]: It'd be a terrible secret set.

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:38:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, maybe like a...

[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_03]: What used to be called the lead stage.

[00:38:33] [SPEAKER_03]: It's the lock up.

[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Lock up.

[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there you go.

[00:38:36] [SPEAKER_03]: There you go.

[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I love it.

[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Brilliant.

[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Guys, thank you so much for your time.

[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Thank you.

[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Cheers.

[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_05]: A massive thank you to Earn, Every Hell and Brontide

[00:38:45] [SPEAKER_05]: for coming onto the podcast

[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_05]: and sharing your experiences playing at music festivals.

[00:38:50] [SPEAKER_05]: I've left links in the show notes

[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_05]: where you can find out more about each band

[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_05]: where you can stream their music,

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_05]: where you can see them live, pick up their merchandise

[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_05]: and just generally support them

[00:38:58] [SPEAKER_05]: on their journey as musicians.

[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Please make sure you do.

[00:39:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Each band is well worth your time

[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_05]: and I'm sure they will greatly appreciate your support.

[00:39:06] [SPEAKER_05]: I want to give a special thank you on this episode

[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_05]: to Jasmine from The Noise Cartel

[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_05]: for helping out organize some of these interviews

[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_05]: as well as Hayley, Polly and Matt
