[00:00:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Hello and welcome to Fandomentals, the podcast that explores pop culture one conversation

[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_02]: at a time. I am your host, Harley. Every episode I interview different people from around

[00:00:25] [SPEAKER_02]: the world to discuss a variety of topics within the world of pop culture. Thanks for joining

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_02]: me on this journey and I hope you enjoy the episode.

[00:00:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the third episode of On The Stage at ArcTanGent. In this episode I'm

[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_02]: joined by Torpor, Modern Technology and Din of Celestial Birds.

[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_02]: This is the final episode of my band interviews from the ArcTanGent Festival. This whole experience

[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_02]: has been an absolute dream. I never ever thought I'd get to do in person interviews

[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_02]: let alone at a music festival for the second time in one year. It's been awesome.

[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much to everyone who's listened to the episodes so far. If you haven't

[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_02]: heard them yet please do yourself a favour and go back and check them out. The

[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_02]: first two episodes are up featuring interviews with seven bands all of whom played at the

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_02]: ArcTanGent Festival. As always I've been sure to leave links in the show notes so

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_02]: you can find out more about each band and support their music.

[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, let's just get to it. This is On The Stage at ArcTanGent with Torpor,

[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Modern Technology and Din of Celestial Birds.

[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Hello Simon, John and Lauren and welcome to the Fandomentals podcast.

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you very much for having us.

[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I should have warned you before you opened that can, shouldn't I?

[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I can say a background noise is not a problem.

[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Hi, we're ready what's going on?

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_02]: It's good to have you guys on. How's your festival been so far?

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_05]: It's been really nice. We've definitely caught up with a lot of bombastic heavy bands

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_05]: and some weird stuff. Bone Ninja were a highlight today. Caught up a little bit of

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_05]: YD Christmas, YE, saw a 100 year old man, absolutely ripping it on the PX3 which is

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_05]: great. So we're very happy for them. And yesterday we saw Lulununu as I like to

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_05]: call them.

[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I had them on earlier. Some interesting guys.

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, sound. Absolutely big bombastic boomy boomy stuff so we're loving that.

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Good times.

[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Very good times.

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Have you got A Son of Mesa this morning?

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, let's try to forget A Son of Mesa. A Son of Mesa were like the perfect way to start

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_05]: our festival actually.

[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I got to say that's one of the best sounding band names I've ever heard at this

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_02]: festival. Every name that comes out I'm like this is brilliant. So good.

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_02]: So guys I want to sort of go back to the start. I'd love to know what was the

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_02]: first festival you guys went to just as punters just to enjoy the music. What was

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_02]: the first one you remember going to?

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, one of the stories because I've I think I only I've only ever really been

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_00]: to one big festival.

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Go on.

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_00]: And we think that we were all there.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, OK.

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_00]: So before we knew each other.

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Nice.

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_00]: No, 12 years before we even met.

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Incredible.

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_00]: So that was Reading 2000.

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Awesome.

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Reading 2000. I think because we managed to figure out because obviously we talk

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_05]: a lot. We've been around for 12 years.

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_03]: It's cool.

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_05]: We were Reading 2000.

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_05]: I was the only one in my friend group that went to go and watch a band

[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_05]: called My Vitriol.

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah.

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Do you remember them?

[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_05]: And obviously me and Lauren hadn't met yet.

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm from Reading.

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, we'd go every year anyway.

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Lauren's also from Reading now since moved to Bristol or whatever.

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Yep.

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Long story short.

[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_05]: And yeah, just through our conversations, I think we all realized all of us,

[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_05]: well, they're not knowing each other.

[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_05]: We're all watching My Vitriol.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Incredible.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Like a soloist.

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_05]: So it's a bit weird.

[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_05]: And we have a few of those little moments.

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_05]: It's quite nice.

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Very cool.

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Who else do you remember seeing at that festival then?

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Amen.

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_05]: OK.

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. Rage Against the Machine.

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_05]: I think that was when it was that 2000.

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Death Tones.

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Death Tones.

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Asian Dub Foundation.

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Daphne and Celeste.

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Daphne and Celeste.

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Daphne and Celeste.

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, they had a bunch of...

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_01]: That was the infamous bottles of piss slinging.

[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, yes.

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I've seen that.

[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_02]: It's fine.

[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I've seen that.

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I've seen that.

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I was there.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_02]: You were there.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_02]: You were hurling them.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_02]: No, I mean, yeah.

[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, I mean, I would literally advocate for, you know,

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_05]: throwing bottles of wee wee at people.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, yeah.

[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, that was what Reading Festival used to be like back then,

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Reading Rock.

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah, yeah.

[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_02]: It was very much, yeah.

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_02]: There's horror stories and there are so many bands.

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I think My Chemical Romance, I think Plain White Teas,

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a lot of bands that took a lot of abuse

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_02]: at those festivals.

[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, you know, for good reason.

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_05]: In some circles.

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_05]: But anyway, that's all subject to opinion, of course.

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_05]: That is.

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_02]: That's very much true, yeah.

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_02]: What about as a band?

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_02]: What was the first one you guys got to play at?

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you remember?

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Festivals.

[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, Desert Fest.

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Desert Fest, OK.

[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_02]: The Black Heart in Camden.

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Did we open?

[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think they created an extra early slot

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_00]: just to slip us on the bill.

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Is that right?

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_00]: It was really early on and we still had four members.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, Nats were still in the band then.

[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Interesting, interesting.

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_05]: OK.

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know when that would have been.

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_05]: 2013, 2014.

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_05]: 2014, nice.

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, 2015 maybe.

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, everything seems to have happened in 2015.

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know if it did.

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_05]: When you're a band for 12 years,

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_05]: you kind of forget after a while how long it's been.

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, but Desert Fest was cracking.

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_05]: We opened, it was stacked.

[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_05]: People were outside.

[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Down the stairs and everything.

[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Wow.

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_05]: It was a good inception to the sort of stoner doom.

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_05]: It was kicking off then.

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_05]: It was really kicking off then.

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_05]: The doom boom they called it.

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Right, OK.

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, the doom boom.

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Or something like that.

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe I've just coined that on my own.

[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_05]: If you have, that's good.

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_05]: No, that's good.

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_05]: I like it.

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, that is quite a nice introduction

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_02]: to have a nice welcome reception.

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_05]: It was a really good way of coming into it, wasn't it?

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Definitely, there was, especially in London,

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_00]: there was a big scene that we kind of stepped into.

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Right.

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, we were welcomed into.

[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_00]: From really early on.

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_00]: And even some of them,

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_00]: I think one of our first gigs, Earth Tone 9,

[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_00]: played didn't they?

[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_05]: No, I think it was Raging Speed Horn you're thinking of.

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Raging Speed Horn.

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, we played with a bunch of old school prominent stuff,

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_05]: bands, you know, back in the day.

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Because it was When Planets Collide back in the day,

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_05]: wasn't it?

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, we put us on with like Slabdrager and Lung

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_05]: and who else was there?

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Diesel King.

[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Diesel King, all that lot.

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, right.

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we did.

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Undersmile, oh, how can I forget?

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Undersmile, yeah.

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Very interesting.

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Taz has got a new project called Holy Wounds.

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Fantastic.

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_05]: We played with them in Oxford last year.

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Fantastic.

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Brilliant.

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Check it out.

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, it's like soundscape-y and gone down a completely

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_05]: different path with her partner, who knew her partner.

[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Fantastic work.

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, they've just finished recording actually,

[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_05]: so we're looking forward to hearing that.

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_05]: As am I now, that's very cool.

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Very cool.

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, we've had a, you know, we've been lucky.

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_05]: We got good support from the local scene and,

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_05]: ever since then it's been kind of the same.

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of the impression I get from speaking to a lot

[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_02]: of bands is the kind of community vibe that you get

[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_02]: at a lot of festivals and like, you know,

[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_02]: like you say, if you sell was being like put first

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_02]: to the bill or, you know, you're on a new thing

[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and you think, oh, how's this going to go?

[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_02]: But actually people are just up for music, right?

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_02]: At festivals.

[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_02]: That's all they want.

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_02]: They just want music full stop.

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't matter who it is.

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_02]: They're just there to have a good time and listen.

[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_02]: So you guys can kind of jump in and make new fans

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and meet new people and have all those cool experiences.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, precisely.

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_05]: I think for us, it's been a bit of a,

[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_05]: we've been working up to this moment being as old

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_05]: as we are as a band, but I mean, we've had a good,

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_05]: we've had a good run like this year.

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_05]: So play, we played Road Burn this year

[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_05]: and playing here is also one of those bucket list

[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_05]: moments for us.

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, like we cherish playing

[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_05]: and we're looking forward to, you know,

[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_05]: hopefully waking a few people up and yeah,

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_02]: seeing how they get on with it.

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.

[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_02]: What have been some of your favourite experiences

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_02]: of playing at festivals so far?

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, you were going to say something then?

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I was going to say the skate park at Road Burn.

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_00]: OK.

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_00]: The second set.

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_00]: And part of that as well, I mean,

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_00]: maybe it sounds weird at kind of metal-y gigs,

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_00]: but actually, I went to you because it wasn't dark as well

[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_00]: so it's light so you can see everyone's faces

[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_00]: and actually looking out and making eye contact

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_00]: and people really like smiling and being really happy

[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_00]: was actually, I don't know, I really like that.

[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty nice.

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, a nice human connection.

[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_00]: It just feels a lot more personal and...

[00:09:44] Sure.

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Just you feel like you're just part of the same thing.

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not like you're on stage and everyone else is out there.

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_00]: We're all just doing the same thing in the park together.

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Well said.

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_00]: That's awesome, I love that.

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would agree with you.

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_01]: The skate park set at Road Burn was so special

[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_01]: because me and Simon have been going as punters

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_01]: to that festival for years

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_01]: and for us it's like the pinnacle of just...

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I love how eclectic their line-ups are

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_01]: and I love the vibe there.

[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_01]: ATG feels similar in the UK

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_01]: but for me Road Burn is the one that I always wanted to play

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_01]: because we've been going there with so many friends now

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and for so many years

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_01]: and to play in the skate park

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and pretty much headline some people's festival

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_01]: and looking out and just seeing all of our friends there

[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_01]: from all over the country, friends from Europe.

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_01]: It was just so special.

[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_05]: It was pretty...

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_05]: It was a pretty crazy experience.

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, you find it.

[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_05]: You can only dream of those moments

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_05]: but it's like...

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Because obviously Road Burn for us

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_05]: has been a place that fosters that kind of...

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_05]: It's that festival that fosters that kind of...

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_05]: our kind of bands.

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_05]: And to see everybody there

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_05]: as enthusiastic as you are for you being there

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_05]: is quite something.

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_05]: So that's what you were talking about

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_05]: is that shared experience of...

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_05]: People are like,

[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah, you're here

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_05]: and we're like, yes!

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_05]: We are, thank God!

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_05]: It's just like...

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, so we had a great time.

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Incredible.

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_05]: We played the songs too fast

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_05]: but you know, whatever.

[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_05]: That's what happens when you're excited.

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you're all excitable.

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_02]: It was cool.

[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Something I've been asking everybody

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's my favourite question to ask bands

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_02]: because I get all sorts of weird and wonderful answers.

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_02]: If you were to have your very own festival

[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_02]: I'd love to know what's the festival called

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_02]: and who are your three dream headlines?

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_02]: You have anyone you want dead or alive.

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a dream festival.

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_05]: We're all like, oh no, we don't want that.

[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_05]: You have to think about that one.

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_05]: That's OK, that's what editing is for.

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't worry.

[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't rush.

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_05]: You like Prince Lauren?

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Did you have Prince on there?

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, would I be allowed to bring Prince back?

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you can have anyone you like.

[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_02]: He didn't say metal bands.

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_02]: This is it.

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_02]: You can have anyone you want.

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, OK.

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_05]: The purple Prince.

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_01]: The pressure.

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Prince would be there.

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Yep.

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_01]: My mind's gone blank now.

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_05]: That's OK.

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd have Porter's Head.

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, f*** yeah.

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, Porter's Head are like one of those bands

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_05]: that when I was younger

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_05]: they really resonated with me

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_05]: because they're obviously a 90s band.

[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes.

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_05]: And I probably should have been too young

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_05]: to understand that level of

[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_05]: like pain and anguish in her lyrics, but

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah, really connected with me.

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I love the trip hop thing.

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_05]: I loved Massive Attack when I was a kid.

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_05]: So I would probably go down that line, I think.

[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_05]: You like Prince.

[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you're talking some local legends for me

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_02]: because I grew up in Bristol

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_02]: and went to school in Porter's Head

[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_02]: so both of those bands were just everywhere.

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly, exactly.

[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Massive, massive influence.

[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Huge, yeah.

[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Good sounds as well.

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_02]: They'd be quite interesting live

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_02]: those sort of acts, yeah.

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Same with Prince, I think.

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it'd be very interesting.

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_01]: It would be eclectic.

[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_01]: It'd be eclectic

[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_01]: and people would be doing collaborations

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_01]: and there'd be improv.

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_01]: It'd be great.

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_05]: I think we'd call it...

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Eclectic Fest, yes.

[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Who else are we having?

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, it's funny because music

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_05]: for us is kind of like a...

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_05]: It is like a

[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_05]: fertile ground.

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Like there's...

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Metal bands don't listen just to metal bands.

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_05]: No, no, no.

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_05]: So you always find, like I said,

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_05]: my upbringing is like, well obviously

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_05]: there's a bit of Ozzy Osbourne

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_05]: and Black Sabbath and all that classic stuff

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_05]: that my old man brought me up with.

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Like Led Zeppelin

[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_05]: and there's Michael Jackson,

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_05]: there's Prince,

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_05]: there's, you know, Budgie,

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_05]: there's all that stuff.

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_05]: There's, you know, Arrested Development

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_05]: when I was younger.

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, I don't know if you remember those guys.

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Like a really cool rap group from the 90s.

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Nina Cherry from my cousins'

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_05]: like background.

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Like some of the old 90s dance music.

[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Like I can't remember the name of the festivals

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_05]: they used to have back then

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_05]: but he was mad on that stuff.

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_05]: So, you know,

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_05]: I remember being handed a tape cassette

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_05]: and a Walkman

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_05]: and my cousin was like,

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah Simon, you need to listen to this man.

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_05]: It's really cool.

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_05]: I was like, alright.

[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_05]: So I'd sit there in my nan's flat

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_05]: at ten years old

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_05]: and he'd be like...

[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, okay, yeah, alright.

[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Is this what Robert listens to?

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Is this what older people listen to?

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Alright, okay.

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, so I mean,

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_05]: you know, you can draw influences from many places.

[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Absolutely.

[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_02]: That's what I would call our festival, Eclecta Fest.

[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Nice.

[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_02]: It sounds quite eclectic, yeah.

[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_02]: How about yourself?

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like you're dodging the question.

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Just sat very quietly in the middle

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_02]: like I'm not going to say anything.

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Because actually lots of the stuff

[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_00]: that I really loved

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_00]: when I was growing up

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I actually don't anymore.

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_00]: I had a conversation with my brother

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_00]: because he asked me the question

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_00]: like who out of your teenage years

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_00]: what bands do you still love now?

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_00]: And I might like some of them,

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_02]: but actually a lot of it...

[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_02]: You're likely to say Fear Factory.

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, Fear Factory probably the only one

[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_00]: that's lasted from a young...

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_00]: because I'm thinking like a young teenager.

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes.

[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Because there's other stuff.

[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I was obsessed with Raging Against the Machine,

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_00]: but now I'm not really that bothered.

[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, to be fair,

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_02]: so Fear Factory I think would be very interesting live.

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's a really solid risk.

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I love me and my metalhead through and through.

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah.

[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_00]: They're playing with the new vocalist now.

[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I think pretty much everyone's new apart from Dino.

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think Dino is the last one standing, bless him.

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_05]: I saw Fear Factory in 1998 in the London Astoria.

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, we went to see them in the Cocoa, didn't we?

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_02]: So would you have them on your bill?

[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I probably wouldn't.

[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_00]: No?

[00:15:55] Fair enough.

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_00]: I still like them.

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_00]: They're not like my favorite.

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_00]: So who are you thinking then?

[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_00]: The band I'm most excited to see here is Meshuggah.

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, same.

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Because never seen them.

[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Can't wait.

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah?

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, right.

[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I've seen them about four or five times.

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_00]: I probably did find them a bit late.

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I've found them probably about...

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I think it was my 18th birthday.

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Or just after that.

[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_00]: What record was it?

[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_00]: When did nothing come out?

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, 1990?

[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I think it was 2002?

[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_00]: 2002, yeah.

[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Right, yeah.

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_00]: When was Chaos Sphere?

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Was that 1999?

[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I was 20 or something like that.

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Sure.

[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I remember it was on my birthday and I was eating an Easter egg.

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_00]: There he goes.

[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I love it.

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Go on.

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_00]: And I heard, because it was their first eight-string album,

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_00]: and I was just like...

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_00]: This sounds weird to me, but I love it.

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_00]: And then I just wanted to just listen to it all the time.

[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And still now, I mean, I hear the influence in...

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of...

[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_00]: As close as I get to a lead guitar on our music.

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_00]: When I've heard it back, I thought...

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_00]: It definitely feels like I'm subconsciously influenced by...

[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_02]: 100%.

[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_00]: They have those leads,

[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_00]: those kind of really simple atmospheric...

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Something to be said for one note

[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_05]: being played with a bit of reverb, isn't it?

[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_05]: 100%.

[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_05]: You know what I mean?

[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Wow!

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Especially against the backdrop

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_02]: of insanely tight rhythm playing.

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_02]: You don't need shreddy shreddy all the time.

[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I'd rather go for them and they're here anyway,

[00:17:35] [SPEAKER_00]: so that's fine.

[00:17:35] [SPEAKER_02]: There you go.

[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Anyone else?

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_02]: In Eclectifest, come on.

[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we'll be like...

[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I was thinking if I could resurrect anyone from the dead,

[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_01]: it'd be Pauline Oliveros.

[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Ooh, OK.

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not familiar, but go on.

[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, yeah, Pauline Oliveros is the grandmother of deep listening.

[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Deep listening?

[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So deep listening is a whole philosophical,

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: meditative approach to listening.

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Interesting.

[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so she founded the whole deep listening movement.

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, right.

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Which is really...

[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm talking about Pauline.

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, OK, yeah.

[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_05]: I was going to say...

[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Pauline would have everybody lying down on the floor

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and she'd have everyone listening to silence,

[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_01]: which is never silence.

[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_01]: She'd have you listening to everything that has ever been

[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_01]: and everything that ever will be

[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and it would blow your mind.

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_02]: That would be an incredible experience, yeah.

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So we're talking eclectic, yeah.

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Go on.

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Two mics at once, brilliant.

[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_00]: At the moment I've got into...

[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I think they're called Warrington Runcorn Development Corporation.

[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Never heard of them, but OK.

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_00]: That's fascinating.

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_00]: So it's like...

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Kind of retro synth, like 80s.

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not like Darkwave, but it's not poppy either.

[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_00]: There's no vocals, so it's all just synth stuff and beats.

[00:19:00] Intriguing.

[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_00]: I discovered that quite recently

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_00]: and I listened to that a lot.

[00:19:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Nice.

[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_00]: It's definitely got a vibe.

[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_02]: So you've got the sugar and then you've got these guys.

[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_02]: This is what I love genuinely, is it's like, yeah,

[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_02]: it's such a mix, but that's what you should have.

[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_02]: And funny enough, I find that heavier bands are the ones

[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_02]: that come out with this stuff.

[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_02]: They're like, yeah, one minute they go in,

[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_02]: obviously I'll have this incredibly heavy band

[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_02]: and then I'm like, and then I'll have Whitney Houston.

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And you're like, what? Sorry?

[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_02]: What?

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_02]: But I'm like, actually, that would be really cool

[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_02]: at a festival.

[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't think about Whitney.

[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'd have Whitney.

[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_02]: There you go.

[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_02]: That's what I mean, yeah.

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Fascinating.

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Or Bjork.

[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, why not?

[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Bjork, why not?

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Up to kind of maybe Vespa team.

[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, pick an era, absolutely.

[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_02]: People get era specific.

[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Why not?

[00:19:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Why not?

[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Anyone you want, I say go for it, yeah.

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Fascinating, fascinating.

[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_02]: The Collector Fest.

[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_02]: The Collector Fest, I love it.

[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Be there.

[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Be there.

[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Coming soon.

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Full of ghosts.

[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_02]: On the moon, why not?

[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Guys, thank you so much for coming on.

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Appreciate it.

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Hello, Owen, and welcome to the Fundamentals podcast.

[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Hey, thanks for having me.

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_02]: My pleasure, sir.

[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I guess my first question for you, my friend,

[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_02]: is I want to go right the way back to the very beginning

[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_02]: of your festival going experiences.

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I want to know, what was the first festival that you went to?

[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, I think it was actually Glastonbury.

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_06]: Ooh.

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I grew up around the corner from here

[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_06]: in Cheddar, Cheddar Gorge.

[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_06]: And so as a local to Glastonbury,

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_06]: we used to get locals tickets.

[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_06]: So I used to go as a teenager.

[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_06]: A friend's mum used to take us

[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_06]: and we'd just go on a Sunday.

[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Then over time, we started going more and more

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_06]: and then eventually did the full weekend.

[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think that was it.

[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_06]: That was the opener to me to festivals

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_06]: and festival experiences.

[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Lovely, lovely.

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_02]: That is one hell of a start.

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you remember who was headlining?

[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Ooh, you know what?

[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Back in those days, I was just doing Sunday.

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Just, you know, I think I was just taken back

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_06]: by the whole experience of festival life.

[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_06]: Of course.

[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, but eventually getting into doing

[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_06]: like the full weekenders with friends.

[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think back then it was like,

[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_06]: you know, radio hit bands like that, you know.

[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Sure.

[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_06]: So yeah, just really sort of opened my eyes

[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_06]: to what festivals could be

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_06]: and live music in that sort of showcase.

[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_06]: And it's been actually interesting

[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_06]: going back to Glastonbury many years down the line.

[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Like I had about a 10, 12 year break

[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_06]: and then going back and it's now expanded

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_06]: into this wild, like huge, very different experiences.

[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_06]: It's like a city, you know, when you go back.

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I was chatting to someone I know

[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_02]: who went the other day and they were saying

[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_02]: it was, what was it, like nearly 150,000?

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_02]: It'd be like a stupid number of people.

[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's like, you know,

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_06]: it's like a full city when you go back.

[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, which I, if you're in the right energy

[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_06]: then it's fantastic.

[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_06]: But if that's not your vibe,

[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_06]: then it's not your vibe.

[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, could be a little overwhelming.

[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I guess, yeah, what I'd love to know then

[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_02]: is what was the first festival

[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_02]: that you guys played at?

[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_02]: So as an artist, do you remember

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_02]: the first one you went to?

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_06]: So we played lots of,

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_06]: you know what's interesting?

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_06]: We played lots of sort of all dayers

[00:22:09] [SPEAKER_06]: and like very small like...

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_06]: Like DIY stuff.

[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_06]: DIY stuff.

[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_06]: But this is actually our first major festival.

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Really?

[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_06]: So this is one.

[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, me and Chris have been

[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_06]: playing music for years.

[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_06]: I've been a band since I was 11.

[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_06]: But actually of all of the groups

[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_06]: and various artists and projects

[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_06]: I've been in, this is like,

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_06]: this is our first major festival experience.

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_06]: Fantastic.

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's exciting.

[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_06]: And what's nice is I run a label as well

[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_06]: called Human Worth.

[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_06]: And actually three of our bands

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_06]: are playing this weekend as well.

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, who's that?

[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_06]: Kulk, Torpor

[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_06]: and our band Modern Technology.

[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_06]: No, I literally just had Torpor on.

[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, there you go.

[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_06]: They were just saying they were looking at you actually.

[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I love those guys.

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_06]: And yeah,

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_06]: I've been following them around recently

[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_06]: because they played Road Burn

[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_06]: this year as well,

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_06]: which was amazing.

[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_06]: And I traveled out to Tilburg to see them

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's just,

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_06]: it's been great seeing them

[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_06]: going from strength to strength

[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_06]: and I don't know,

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_06]: they played two sets at Road Burn

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_06]: and it just totally blew the crowd away.

[00:23:09] [SPEAKER_06]: You could just see the excitement for them.

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_06]: So that's been lovely.

[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_06]: And yeah, for us,

[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_06]: we're just sort of doing our thing

[00:23:15] [SPEAKER_06]: and we're,

[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_06]: you know,

[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_06]: me and Chris, my bandmate,

[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_06]: we both just haven't got

[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_06]: huge expectations for a band.

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_06]: We're just enjoying what we're doing

[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_06]: and the fact that

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_06]: we've been asked to play festivals like this

[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_06]: recently came off the back of

[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_06]: a run of shows with Chatpile

[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_06]: from the US and UK.

[00:23:34] [SPEAKER_06]: We got invited along to their UK show run

[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's just wild

[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_06]: because we're really sort of

[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_06]: we're just enjoying what we're doing.

[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_06]: There aren't any huge expectations.

[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_06]: Nice.

[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_06]: It's just lovely

[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_06]: just being invited to these things

[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_06]: and we're just giving it our all

[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_06]: at every moment.

[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_02]: That's fantastic, man.

[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I love to hear that.

[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_02]: So I guess, yeah,

[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_02]: this kind of leads into a question

[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_02]: that I've been asking everybody.

[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_02]: With bands is what you find appealing

[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_02]: about playing festivals, right?

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Because I think it's a completely

[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_02]: different experience for a band.

[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, for sure.

[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_02]: So what is it for you

[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_02]: that draws you in and things?

[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I want to play Arctangent,

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_02]: for example.

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, I think playing a festival

[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_06]: like this that's so established,

[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_06]: I guess it's just opening the doors

[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_06]: to new audiences.

[00:24:15] [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm sure there's going to be

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_06]: a lot of people here

[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_06]: we're playing tomorrow,

[00:24:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Friday at the Bixler.

[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sure there's going to be

[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_06]: a lot of people who won't know

[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_06]: who the hell we are.

[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_06]: And that's really exciting

[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_06]: because quite often when we're

[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_06]: playing shows,

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_06]: even if they're big

[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_06]: sort of stadium gigs

[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_06]: like the recent Chatpile gigs,

[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_06]: you know, a lot of the crowd have come

[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_06]: and they know we're on the ticket.

[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_06]: The nice thing about festivals

[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_06]: is people are just here

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_06]: for the music

[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_06]: to see various bands

[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_06]: and the hope is that

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_06]: we might sort of turn a few heads

[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_06]: and, you know,

[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_06]: there might be a few new people

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_06]: into us by the end of the set.

[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_06]: But that's lovely.

[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_06]: And also I think

[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_06]: there's something about

[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_06]: the energy of a festival.

[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_06]: People are just open

[00:24:54] [SPEAKER_06]: to everything.

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_06]: They're just here

[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_06]: to enjoy and to

[00:24:59] [SPEAKER_06]: take in new stuff.

[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_06]: So it's always quite like

[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_06]: an open armed experience.

[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_06]: It is.

[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_06]: I agree.

[00:25:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited about that.

[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Brilliant.

[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Brilliant.

[00:25:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And obviously you've had

[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_02]: very limited experience

[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_02]: with bigger festivals,

[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_02]: but in terms of even like

[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_02]: the little all dayers, DIY,

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_02]: are there any sort of fond memories,

[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_02]: anything that sticks out to you

[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_02]: in your experience?

[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_06]: I think it's just actually

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_06]: it's been the underdog

[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_06]: a little bit, you know,

[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_06]: it's something quite fun about

[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_06]: turning up to like

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_06]: I remember playing

[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_06]: an all day festival in Margate

[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_06]: a few years back

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_06]: and it was something really nice.

[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_06]: We just got put on this tiny

[00:25:35] [SPEAKER_06]: it was in a venue called Elsewhere,

[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_06]: which is a record store

[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_06]: slash venue on two floors.

[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_06]: It's really nice space

[00:25:44] [SPEAKER_06]: and we were just put on

[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_06]: on the little stage by the bar.

[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_06]: And I don't know,

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_06]: it's just really lovely

[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_06]: just going in with

[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_06]: zero expectation

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_06]: and then coming away

[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_06]: and just having the sort of

[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_06]: feedback from the crowd

[00:25:59] [SPEAKER_06]: and having people who

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_06]: maybe never seen us before

[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_06]: so just being excited

[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_06]: about what we're doing.

[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Also just getting to be around

[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_06]: people we really expect

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_06]: and respect and admire

[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_06]: and what's wild about this festival

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Art Tangerine this year

[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_06]: is like playing the same day

[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_06]: as Meshuggah, you know

[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_06]: it's just like

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_06]: that's such a wild thing

[00:26:17] [SPEAKER_06]: just being on that sort of line up

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_06]: so I think we're just

[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_06]: we're just always just happy

[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_06]: and excited to be

[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_06]: playing and enjoying our music

[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_06]: because the main thing for us

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_06]: is we just love performing

[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's really nice

[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_06]: when you get that feedback

[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_06]: for people enjoying

[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_06]: seeing us do that.

[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, yeah, yeah

[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's been quite a nice

[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_02]: sort of common theme

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_02]: in a lot of these discussions

[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I've had is yeah

[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_02]: that idea of like you say

[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_02]: finding a new audience

[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_02]: meeting people

[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_02]: that you look up to

[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_02]: in the industry

[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_02]: or people that you're friends with

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and yeah, a sense of community

[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_02]: it's definitely very strong.

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh yeah, I mean

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_06]: I've only been here an hour

[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_06]: and I've already bumped into

[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_06]: a ton of friends

[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_06]: and you know

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_06]: friends of our band

[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_06]: friends of the label

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_06]: friends like

[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_06]: the guy who screen prints our merch

[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_06]: you know

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_06]: it's all like

[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_06]: they're all here

[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's really lovely

[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm going to give him a shout

[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Vino Sangri

[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_06]: if anyone needs

[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_06]: merch printed

[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_06]: he's the man

[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_06]: so yeah

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_06]: go and check him out

[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I might have to have a chat with him

[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I've had an idea for something

[00:27:10] [SPEAKER_02]: that I keep

[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_02]: rattling around my brain

[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_02]: so I'll chat to you about that

[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_02]: after it's good

[00:27:16] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_02]: no, dude

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_02]: that's awesome

[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_02]: and

[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_02]: something I've been asking everybody

[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_02]: is my favourite question

[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_02]: to ask artists

[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_02]: but you're probably going to find

[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_02]: this very hard

[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll warn you

[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_02]: if you were to have

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_02]: your own festival

[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I want to know

[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_02]: what's it called firstly

[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_02]: and

[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_02]: who were your three

[00:27:31] [SPEAKER_02]: dream headliners

[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_02]: you can have

[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_02]: anyone you want dead or alive

[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_06]: wow

[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_06]: okay

[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_06]: that's wild

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_06]: it's a big one

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_06]: you know what

[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_06]: I have been toying with the idea

[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_06]: of doing a

[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Human Worth related festival

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_06]: so

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_06]: so the label

[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_06]: just to give you some background

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_06]: it's a charitable label

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_06]: so

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_06]: a portion of the proceeds

[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_06]: from all of our releases

[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_06]: goes to

[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_06]: a charity of each band's choosing

[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_06]: brilliant

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_06]: and actually we started

[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_06]: as

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_06]: a run of shows

[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_06]: so we

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_06]: were just doing little showcases

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_06]: around the country

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Human Worth nights

[00:28:04] [SPEAKER_06]: bringing together bands

[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_06]: we loved

[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_06]: and then the proceeds from the night

[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_06]: was going to charity

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_06]: so it just felt like

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_06]: a really nice start

[00:28:10] [SPEAKER_06]: but it's eventually

[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_06]: evolved into a label

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_06]: not just releasing our stuff

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_06]: but releasing stuff

[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_06]: from bands

[00:28:16] [SPEAKER_06]: we love and admire

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_06]: it feels like a real community

[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_06]: there's a real sense of

[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_06]: love and respect there

[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_06]: so

[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_06]: I've been toying with

[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_06]: doing that

[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_06]: but in terms of expanding

[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_06]: beyond that

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean

[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Jesus

[00:28:30] [SPEAKER_06]: the Locust

[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_06]: would have been nice

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_06]: you know

[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_06]: maybe

[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_06]: an unfortunate

[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_06]: thing

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_06]: it's like sad

[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_06]: that

[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_06]: that is not possible anymore

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_06]: I think in terms of

[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_06]: larger bands

[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_06]: hmm

[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_06]: that's a hard one

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_06]: it's a real hard one

[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_06]: I just want to think of

[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_06]: who we've

[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_06]: even been

[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_06]: listening to and admiring

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_06]: recently

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_06]: this is a very hard question

[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I know yeah

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_02]: the problem is you have

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_02]: too many options isn't it

[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah

[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I find I see

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I think of like

[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_02]: do I go with my favourites

[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_02]: or do I go with someone

[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I've

[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_02]: you know would never

[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_02]: had the opportunity

[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_02]: to see

[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_02]: like you said

[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_02]: someone made me passed on

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_02]: or a certain era

[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_02]: there's so many options

[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_02]: there's so many options

[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_02]: I like just whatever

[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_02]: comes to your heart

[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_02]: where you're like

[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah

[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I want those guys

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_06]: the thing is

[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm always drawn

[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_06]: to the like

[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_06]: the bigger

[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_06]: more mainstream

[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_06]: like

[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Zeppelin

[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah

[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_06]: they've come up

[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_06]: a number of times today

[00:29:27] [SPEAKER_06]: I would have

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_06]: loved to have seen them

[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_06]: in their heyday

[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_06]: same

[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_06]: the idea of

[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_06]: bringing them back

[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_06]: would be phenomenal

[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_02]: any specific album

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_02]: here or

[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_06]: ooh

[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_06]: maybe two

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_06]: yep

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_06]: you know

[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_06]: that's

[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_06]: I've got fond memories

[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_06]: of

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_06]: my dad's

[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_06]: record collection at home

[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_06]: and that record always

[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_06]: just used to come out

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_06]: I think even as a

[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_06]: toddler

[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_06]: I sort of

[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_06]: scrawled all over

[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_06]: the sleeve

[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_06]: so there's like

[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_06]: a tainted version

[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_06]: of that record

[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_06]: at our family home

[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_06]: which

[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_06]: I just

[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know

[00:29:58] [SPEAKER_06]: it's got a real sort of

[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_06]: fond place in my heart

[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_06]: and also

[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_06]: you know

[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_06]: in terms of

[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_06]: musicianship

[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_06]: I think it's a big

[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_06]: inspiration for us as well

[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_02]: nice

[00:30:08] [SPEAKER_06]: also

[00:30:08] [SPEAKER_06]: god I mean

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_06]: there's so many bands

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_06]: like

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Shellac

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_06]: recent

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_06]: LBV

[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah

[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_06]: sort of

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_06]: very sad

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_06]: but that's

[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_06]: all happened

[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_06]: and I feel like

[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_06]: as a band

[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_06]: they were like

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_06]: a big inspiration

[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_06]: on our

[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_06]: early sound

[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_06]: the Melvins also

[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_06]: have always

[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_06]: they still exist

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_06]: but

[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_06]: we

[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I think there's

[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_06]: a sort of like

[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_06]: an enjoyment

[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_06]: of the

[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_06]: the riff

[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_06]: and

[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_06]: this sort of

[00:30:35] [SPEAKER_06]: experimental side

[00:30:35] [SPEAKER_06]: which

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_06]: always plays true

[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_06]: to our hearts

[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_06]: as musicians

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_06]: interesting

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah so like

[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_06]: a range of bands like that

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_06]: there are also like

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_06]: a ton of bands

[00:30:45] [SPEAKER_06]: from our label

[00:30:45] [SPEAKER_06]: yes

[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_06]: I think remote viewing

[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Sly and the Family Drone

[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_06]: who are about to release

[00:30:50] [SPEAKER_06]: a record with

[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_06]: the Euro Suite

[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm just basically giving

[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_06]: shouts out to all the bands

[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_06]: we love

[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_06]: go for it

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah I'm all the Maris

[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah

[00:31:02] [SPEAKER_06]: I think just sort of like

[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_06]: celebrating those eyes

[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Alice Lacey

[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_06]: who's a

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_06]: she's like kind of an avant

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_06]: classical musician

[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_06]: pianist

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_06]: singer-songwriter

[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_06]: really beautiful

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_06]: quite dark

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_06]: brooding stuff

[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_06]: and also

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_06]: a three piece

[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_06]: called Y Patterns

[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_06]: who I

[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_06]: adore

[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_06]: and they've got a new

[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_06]: record coming out

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_06]: and they've got

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_06]: members of

[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Warren Schoenbrite

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_06]: and Ren

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_06]: in their team

[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_06]: just

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_06]: their new record

[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_06]: they basically stripped away

[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_06]: any of the niceties

[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah

[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's just

[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_06]: 10 tracks

[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_06]: 18 minutes

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_06]: of just

[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_06]: all in your face

[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_06]: disgustingness

[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's fantastic

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_06]: sounds great

[00:31:42] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah I think

[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_06]: I think a bit of the old

[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_06]: bit of a new

[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah

[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I like that

[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_02]: a nice mix

[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_02]: that's great

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Owen thank you so much

[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_02]: for coming on the podcast

[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_02]: thank you so much

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah much appreciate

[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_02]: cheers

[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_02]: cheers

[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_02]: hello Matt and Tom

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and welcome to

[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_02]: the fundamentals podcast

[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_02]: thanks

[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah thanks for having us

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_02]: my pleasure

[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah how's your day

[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_02]: going so far

[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_02]: good

[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_02]: it's hot

[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_02]: it is

[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_02]: very hot today

[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_02]: compared to yesterday

[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_02]: with all the rain

[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_02]: that was weird

[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I got sunburned

[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_02]: and soaked at the same time

[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_02]: it was strange

[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_02]: went back to my campervan

[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was like

[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_03]: well what do I pack

[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I got shorts

[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and a raincoat

[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_03]: and sun cream

[00:32:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and you're just like

[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I need all of them

[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_04]: at the same time

[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah I went raincoatless

[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_04]: in the hope that

[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_04]: the atmospheric heat

[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_04]: would evaporate the water

[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_04]: but then actually

[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_04]: what happened is

[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_04]: it just got incredibly wet

[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_04]: and

[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_04]: the cloud cover

[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_04]: just descended

[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_04]: and came

[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_04]: quite

[00:32:38] yeah

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_04]: quite unpleasant

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_02]: brilliant

[00:32:41] [SPEAKER_02]: joys of a UK festival

[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_02]: there you go

[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_02]: my first question to you guys

[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_02]: is I want to go back

[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_02]: a little bit

[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_02]: with your festival

[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_02]: going experience

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_02]: so I want to know

[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_02]: what was the first festival

[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_02]: that you guys went to

[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_02]: just as attendants really

[00:32:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I think for me

[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_03]: it was probably

[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Leeds Fest in 2007

[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to say

[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_03]: really?

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_03]: wow ok

[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it had

[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to say it had

[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_03]: obviously it had Metallica

[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_03]: because they play everything

[00:33:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and maybe it had

[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Rage Against The Machine

[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_03]: that might have been 2008

[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't really know

[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that

[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_04]: was that not the one

[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_04]: with Nine Inch Nails

[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_04]: it was Nine Inch Nails

[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_04]: and Smashing Pumpkins

[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_04]: and Smashing Pumpkins

[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_04]: and the band that we don't mention

[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_04]: that was my first festival as well

[00:33:23] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah

[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_02]: really?

[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_02]: you guys went to the same one

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_04]: we go way back

[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_04]: we used to go to school together

[00:33:29] [SPEAKER_02]: oh lovely

[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_02]: cool

[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_02]: that's a hell of a

[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_02]: first experience

[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_02]: quite a few bands as well

[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_02]: but

[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I think a lot of people

[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_02]: would absolutely love to see

[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_02]: if they haven't already

[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_02]: that's really cool

[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_02]: and how about

[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_02]: as a band

[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_02]: what was the first gig

[00:33:41] [SPEAKER_02]: that you guys got booked out

[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_02]: the first festival

[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_04]: first festival gig

[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_04]: it depends what you're counting

[00:33:47] [SPEAKER_04]: as a festival I suppose

[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_04]: right

[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_04]: because obviously

[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_04]: you've got outdoor festivals

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_04]: and then you've got

[00:33:52] [SPEAKER_04]: sort of all day

[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_04]: festival event type things

[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_04]: though

[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah

[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say our first

[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_03]: big festival

[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_03]: was

[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Artegen last year

[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_03]: really?

[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah

[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_02]: wow ok

[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and how did that go for you

[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm assuming well

[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_02]: because you're here

[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_02]: so you've come back

[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_03]: it was

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_03]: it was

[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_03]: such a

[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_03]: you know

[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_03]: it's hard to really describe

[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_03]: that first time

[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_03]: you go on a big stage

[00:34:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and there's just a tent

[00:34:15] [SPEAKER_03]: full of people

[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_03]: mind blown

[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and I've been like

[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_03]: talking to

[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_03]: been talking to

[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Pilates

[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Pilates

[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Pilates

[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_03]: they're like

[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_03]: because they basically

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_03]: had the similar slot

[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_03]: to what we had last year

[00:34:28] [SPEAKER_03]: so I'm just like

[00:34:30] [SPEAKER_03]: vicariously living

[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_03]: the first festival

[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_03]: experience again

[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_03]: awesome

[00:34:34] [SPEAKER_04]: it was really enjoyable

[00:34:35] [SPEAKER_04]: to see

[00:34:35] [SPEAKER_04]: their beaming faces

[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_04]: when they came off stage

[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_04]: and

[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_04]: you know

[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_04]: for me

[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_04]: to see them

[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_04]: with that crowd

[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_04]: that was

[00:34:45] [SPEAKER_04]: important because

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_04]: they deserve a crowd like that

[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_04]: and

[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I was

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_04]: just absolutely

[00:34:51] like

[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_04]: I was so happy

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_04]: for them

[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_04]: watching them

[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_04]: absolutely

[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_04]: destroy the Oki stage

[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_04]: yesterday

[00:34:58] [SPEAKER_04]: and

[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah

[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_04]: they deserve it

[00:35:01] [SPEAKER_04]: every success

[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_04]: and we're going to see

[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_04]: the same thing happen

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_04]: to our friends

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_04]: in Fort tomorrow

[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_02]: oh nice

[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_02]: nice

[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_02]: that's really cool

[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah

[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I've got them on

[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_02]: actually tomorrow

[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I believe

[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_02]: so yeah

[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_02]: look forward to finding out

[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_02]: a bit more about their set

[00:35:12] [SPEAKER_02]: and how it all goes

[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I guess

[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_02]: something I want to explore

[00:35:15] [SPEAKER_02]: with you guys

[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_02]: is

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_02]: really the appeal

[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_02]: of playing festivals

[00:35:19] [SPEAKER_02]: right

[00:35:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I think you guys have touched

[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_02]: upon a few things already

[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_02]: but

[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah

[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I think when I chat to bands

[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_02]: a lot of the time

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I think people understand

[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_02]: you know

[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_02]: playing going on the road

[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_02]: perhaps touring

[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_02]: even touring

[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_02]: with some of your favourite artists

[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_02]: right

[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_02]: that sort of thing

[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_02]: but

[00:35:32] [SPEAKER_02]: festivals are completely different

[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_02]: aren't they for bands

[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_02]: a completely different experience

[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_02]: so

[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah what was it

[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_02]: about a festival that you guys

[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_02]: enjoy

[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_02]: what sort of appeals to you

[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_02]: makes you want to

[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_02]: come and play them

[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_03]: erm

[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_03]: it's just

[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_03]: such a big

[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_03]: like community spirit

[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_03]: of these things

[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_03]: right

[00:35:47] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's just

[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_03]: off their big mates fest

[00:35:49] [SPEAKER_03]: we've spoken about bands

[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_03]: that we're friends with

[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's just a great

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_03]: you know

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_03]: and your programmeage

[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_03]: to see all your friends

[00:35:57] [SPEAKER_03]: because you make so many friends

[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_03]: at

[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_03]: you know

[00:36:00] [SPEAKER_03]: small shows

[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_03]: yes

[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and then

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_03]: but you never see them again

[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_03]: until it comes to festival time

[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_03]: which is there

[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_03]: right

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_04]: I was

[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_04]: there's a

[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_04]: important element to this

[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_04]: that I was

[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_04]: talking to 100 year old man

[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_04]: about yesterday

[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_04]: right

[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean 100

[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_04]: 100 year old man

[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_04]: have done a few festivals

[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_04]: you know

[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_04]: they

[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_04]: erm

[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_04]: they are a fantastic bunch of musicians

[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_04]: and they

[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_04]: they played an absolutely blinding set

[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_04]: yesterday in PX3

[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_04]: which again

[00:36:24] [SPEAKER_04]: you know

[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_04]: absolutely

[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_04]: like

[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_04]: beaming

[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_04]: to see

[00:36:29] [SPEAKER_04]: so many people

[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_04]: turnout

[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_04]: before they stepped on the stage

[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_04]: that tent was

[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_04]: you know

[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_04]: pouring out the sides

[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_04]: brilliant

[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_04]: and

[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_04]: you know

[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_04]: we were just having a chat

[00:36:36] [SPEAKER_04]: about

[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_04]: what it means

[00:36:38] [SPEAKER_04]: as a band

[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_04]: to be playing

[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_04]: a festival like this

[00:36:41] [SPEAKER_04]: and

[00:36:42] [SPEAKER_04]: the

[00:36:42] [SPEAKER_04]: the rest of the time

[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_04]: we're playing smaller gigs

[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_04]: around the UK

[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_04]: and we're building

[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_04]: an audience

[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_04]: you know

[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_04]: erm

[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_04]: and we're

[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_04]: building and maintaining

[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_04]: this scene, you know all the bands who descend on Arc Tangent, they're spending the rest

[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_04]: of their time, even some of the bigger bands playing smaller shows right. A festival like

[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_04]: this brings together so many people and it's certainly like I mean particularly at this

[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_04]: point in our career it's the only time we're going to play to that many people.

[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Right okay.

[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_04]: You know and to see so many people that we've been playing to around the UK and

[00:37:15] [SPEAKER_04]: even you know afar right we've you know we've got people that we were over playing to in

[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Belgium and stuff coming over gave you a massive crate of beer I believe.

[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh nice.

[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_04]: And to see everybody come together I mean you know I think it's surreal and it just

[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_04]: feels like a huge family.

[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah yeah I get that, I get that yeah that's really nice to hear and it's something

[00:37:39] [SPEAKER_02]: that has kind of been a nice sentiment from a lot of bands I've spoken to is exactly

[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_02]: what you talked about the community and then the chance to reach a new audience and grow

[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_02]: and I imagine for a band like yourselves like coming back and seeing yourself on

[00:37:51] [SPEAKER_02]: a different bill or a different stage is kind of a nice way of seeing your growth

[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_02]: right and being like oh we are moving up in the world there are people there is

[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_02]: an audience for us basically yeah.

[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_02]: We didn't know what to expect did we?

[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_03]: No not really, just walk out and you're like oh there's people there.

[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Nice so on that note I'd love to know what have been some of your favorite experiences

[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_02]: or fond memories from playing festivals so far?

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I think one of the festivals that really sticks out is when we went to Belgium for

[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_03]: our first like mainland Europe show.

[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Awesome.

[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah yeah.

[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a very long drive because we played in Cambridge the night before.

[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah yeah.

[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_03]: We drove across the border and all that and took forever so we didn't get there

[00:38:33] [SPEAKER_03]: until like two o'clock the next day.

[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah we slept at Dunk Studios they very kindly let us sleep there because we said

[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_04]: you know we're playing a show the night before we need to drive through the night

[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_04]: to get to you and can we get some sleep and it was quite cool because I mean we

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_04]: love Dunk as a label and obviously they press our records and stuff and they do

[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_04]: a fantastic job and getting to visit their HQ was pretty cool but it was quite funny

[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_04]: because then we walk in and they're just these bunk beds.

[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So we went to sleep in there.

[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh that's really cool.

[00:39:13] [SPEAKER_04]: But like still knackered by the time we hit the stage right?

[00:39:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah yeah.

[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But it was such a you know we know people in the UK but to go to Belgium and

[00:39:22] [SPEAKER_03]: then it's like people like is here as well what?

[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I mean I walked out into the room all we soundchecked got all our

[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_04]: stuff set up.

[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_04]: I can't pronounce the name of the building that it's in but it's this

[00:39:34] [SPEAKER_04]: massive very beautiful concert hall in the centre of Ghent and it's an

[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_04]: astonishing building with a bunch of really fantastic venues inside.

[00:39:47] [SPEAKER_04]: And we were playing the ballroom and I walked out into the main room before

[00:39:55] [SPEAKER_04]: we went on.

[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't know what to expect right like this is our first time in

[00:39:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Belgium etc etc and it was already packed and I was like this is crazy.

[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I was like you know and to have that reception our first time abroad was

[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_04]: phenomenal so huge thanks to Dunk for having us over and we certainly

[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_04]: want to come back.

[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I mean what a highlight yeah and again that's something else I've

[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_02]: noticed talking to people is yeah the opportunities to travel like get

[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_02]: on those circuits see new people new countries new experiences brilliant I

[00:40:27] [SPEAKER_02]: absolutely love it.

[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_02]: So I guess my final question to you guys and it's I'm going to warn you

[00:40:32] [SPEAKER_02]: it's a brutal question because everyone reacts when I ask them this.

[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_02]: If you were to have your own festival I want to know what's it

[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_02]: called and who are your three dream headliners now you can have

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_02]: anyone you like dead or alive.

[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Burbfest.

[00:40:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I've always thought something like Festival of Celestial Birds.

[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh that's very good.

[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I like it I really like it.

[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I would book Cloud Kicker.

[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh nice.

[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I think they've only ever done one tour and it's just the one guy.

[00:41:12] [SPEAKER_03]: It'd be interesting.

[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_03]: You can get a band it's fine.

[00:41:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah yeah of course.

[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_03]: What would you book?

[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Carnival.

[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Carnival oh yeah.

[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.

[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Who do we want on the third on the bill?

[00:41:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh it's difficult isn't it.

[00:41:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I think like with Cloud Kicker and Carnival we're setting it up to be

[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_04]: quite a proggy festival.

[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Do we need someone who's going to bring in a completely different vibe?

[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_04]: You can go anywhere you like.

[00:41:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I've had all sorts of weird and wonderful answers to this question.

[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Do you want something like really left field?

[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_03]: What are you thinking?

[00:41:44] [SPEAKER_03]: What are you thinking?

[00:41:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Square pusher.

[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh okay.

[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_02]: That is left field.

[00:41:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I like it.

[00:41:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah yeah very cool very cool.

[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll go to that festival.

[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah as would I and the name alone I think would definitely pull a lot of people in.

[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I was going to say to you guys actually up top I genuinely think your band name

[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_02]: is one of the best band names I've ever heard like it's great.

[00:42:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you very much.

[00:42:04] [SPEAKER_03]: When it came through I was like oh I'm definitely talking to those guys like that's

[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_03]: a brilliant name.

[00:42:08] [SPEAKER_03]: So I go in swings around about some like some days I'm like oh I hate it and some

[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_04]: days oh it's a great day.

[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_04]: The funny thing is is that everybody like has a different way of shortening the name

[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_04]: to make it accessible and I was chatting to like some people call us birds.

[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay right.

[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Some people call us din.

[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And then yesterday I found out that some people in Artist Liaison are calling us

[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_04]: din of.

[00:42:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Din of?

[00:42:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Which I was like oh okay.

[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Interesting.

[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Din of.

[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I feel like you just stopped us din.

[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I was going to say yeah yeah I felt like an Eastern European kind of.

[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_02]: That's what happened one day you'll go back to Belgium or something and there'll

[00:42:50] [SPEAKER_02]: be another band that is just called din of and then everyone will get really

[00:42:52] [SPEAKER_02]: confused.

[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean people are already confused.

[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_04]: With the name that long we'd be the only band with the name.

[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_04]: And we're named after a film from around 2006.

[00:43:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Is that right?

[00:43:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Short film.

[00:43:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Short sort of art house film.

[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Lovely.

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Called Din of Celestial Birds.

[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_04]: It's not very long it's about 15 minutes long you can go watch it.

[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Put it in the show notes yeah okay.

[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think the assumption was that name wasn't going to be problematic and it turns out

[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_04]: that actually there was.

[00:43:21] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think they're active anymore but there's a little bit of overlap I think.

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_04]: And there's an Italian extreme metal band called Din of Celestial Birds.

[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_04]: They don't seem to do any shows anymore.

[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It used to be that if someone was tagging us on Facebook they would get tagged first

[00:43:37] [SPEAKER_03]: but I think we're big enough now that.

[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_03]: You've overtaken them.

[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah yeah yeah.

[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's all good.

[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah it's fine now but it was a little bit awkward and it's when you're explaining to

[00:43:46] [SPEAKER_04]: someone oh no sorry this name actually isn't original.

[00:43:50] [SPEAKER_04]: It just has a lot of syllables.

[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Well either way I think it's really great and as we've learned it lends itself nicely

[00:43:58] [SPEAKER_02]: to a festival so there you go win-win.

[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.

[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_02]: That's brilliant thanks very much for coming on guys.

[00:44:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks for having us.

[00:44:04] [SPEAKER_02]: A massive thank you there to Torpor, Modern Technology and Din of Celestial Birds

[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_02]: for coming on to the podcast.

[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_02]: As I said up top you can find links in the show notes so you can learn more about each

[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_02]: band and support them on their journey as musicians.

[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure they would greatly appreciate it.

[00:44:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I also want to give a massive shout out to Chris Frenchy French from the PR trial

[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_02]: as well as Hayley, Holly and Matt from The Goodest Gold Group for helping organize

[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_02]: these interviews.

[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you all so much.

[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I could not have done it without you.

[00:44:33] [SPEAKER_02]: These interviews have been incredible.

[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I had such a great time at the festival.

[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm also incredibly grateful to Arc Tangent just for letting me come along and do my

[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_02]: thing.

[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_02]: It really is a dream come true.

[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I cannot overstate that enough.

[00:44:47] [SPEAKER_02]: So thank you from the bottom of my heart.

[00:44:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I deeply appreciate it.

[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_02]: And thank you to you dear listener if this is your first time listening to Fundamentals.

[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for taking out some time to just invest in the podcast and check it out.

[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I really do appreciate it.

[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_02]: If you like what you heard please go back and listen to the previous episodes if

[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_02]: you haven't already and stay tuned for more.

[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_02]: There are two more episodes coming up from my time at the Arc Tangent Festival and those

[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_02]: are going to be off the stage episodes where I talk to people who are behind the scenes
