The storm arrived before England did.

[00:00:56] Above Mexico City, dark clouds gathered above the Azteca. Rain fell, thunder rolled, lightning flashed somewhere beyond the great bowl of the stadium. And for a while, everyone had to wait. The players sat in their dressing rooms. The fans waited in their seats. Then, after an hour's delay, the night finally began. Mexico against England, a World Cup knockout game.

[00:01:26] Inside one of football's loudest, proudest stadiums. Tonight, the Azteca felt alive. Full of red, white and green flags. The home crowd sang with the kind of voice that comes from believing a special night is possible. England walked out with white shirts and calm faces to the wall of sound in front of them. For Thomas Tuchel's men, there was no gentle start to this game.

[00:01:55] Mexico came at England straight away. Quick and sharp. Lifted by every shout from the stands. And the noise grew each time Mexico touched the ball. After 15 minutes, Raul Jimenez threw himself at a cross. A diving header and a proper striker's chance. For one second, it looked like the Azteca was about to explode. England's Jordan Pickford flew across his goal and kept it out.

[00:02:25] But Mexico kept coming. It was as if the stadium itself was trying to push the ball into England's net. But England had Jude Bellingham. And on nights like this, he seemed to feel the moment before anyone else did. 36 minutes had gone when England broke forward. Declan Rice drove through midfield, strong and direct. But Kaio Saka waited on the box.

[00:02:52] Took the ball, looked up and shaped a cross into the box. Bellingham was already moving. He threw himself forward and met it with a diving header. The ball flew in. Mexico 0. England 1. For a moment, the Azteca fell silent. Bellingham slid away in celebration as the England players ran towards him.

[00:03:21] A stormy night had its first flash of brilliance. Then, before Mexico could steady themselves, England struck again. Who says lightning never strikes twice? 98 seconds later, and still inside the shock of the first goal, Harry Kane found space. England moved the ball quickly, while the Mexican defence scrambled back, trying to close the gaps that had suddenly opened. And there was Bellingham again.

[00:03:49] Right place, right time. Close to goal, forcing the ball over the line. Mexico 0. England 2. England fans could hardly believe what they'd seen. In this huge, hostile stadium, against the co-host of the World Cup, England had scored twice in a blur. But the Azteca wasn't ready to fall silent again.

[00:04:19] Mexico answered, and this time with feeling. The crowd found its voice, and the players chased harder. Every Mexican attack carried more urgency than the last. Until a free kick saw the ball go into the England box, followed by a bounce and a scramble, and a loose ball that wouldn't quite go away. Julian Quinones reacted first and drove it in. Mexico 1. England 2.

[00:04:46] The stadium roared back to life, and Mexico had found their voice. Before half-time, Jimenez came close with another header. Pickford stretched high and pushed it over the bar. It was the kind of save that looks even better because of when it happens. Just before the whistle as well, when teams can easily lose their grip on the game. But at half-time, with England leading, the players walked off. 15 minutes later, the second half began with the same edge.

[00:05:17] England almost found a third when Nico O'Reilly struck from distance and hit the post. The ball cracked against the frame of the goal and spun away. It was close enough to make England fans jump, and close enough to make Mexico believe they were still alive. Then the match turned. Jarell Kwanza went into a challenge with Jesus Gallardo. Then the referee went to the VAR monitor. As players stood with hands on hips, fans whistled. And a decision came.

[00:05:47] Red card. And Kwanza was off. England were down to ten men. Inside the Azteca, with half an hour to play. A one-goal lead to hold onto. Mexico pushed forward, and England had to close spaces quickly. Every run had to be tracked. Every loose ball felt dangerous, and more work was needed to make up for the missing man. Then Anthony Gordon broke through.

[00:06:16] Fast and direct, running into green space. The Mexico goalkeeper, Raul Rangel, came out. Gordon got there, and was brought down by Rangel. Penalty to England. Harry Kane picked up the ball. The captain, in a race for the golden boot, stood on the spot. With rain in the air, noise in his ears, and the pressure of everyone around him, he stood tall and calm. Kane ran up, and scored.

[00:06:46] Mexico won, England three. And for a few minutes, England had room to breathe. Soon, Mexico came again. Their World Cup dream was slipping away in front of their own fans, in their own stadium. But they refused to leave quietly. Another decision. Another VAR check. Another penalty. This time for Mexico.

[00:07:15] Raul Jimenez stood over it. The Azteca waited. Pickford bounced on his line, but Jimenez scored. Mexico two, England three. The stadium lifted again. And with England down to ten men, and twenty minutes still to play, Mexico felt rejuvenated. They crossed. They ran.

[00:07:43] They pushed the England team all the way, filling their box with green shirts. Tuchel's men dropped deeper and deeper, trying to protect the lead that had once looked big, and now felt as thin as a thread. Triple substitutions from Dan Byrne, Jed Spence, and John Stone seemed to help. Although England weren't chasing another goal, they were chasing the final whistle. Headers away. Block shots. Arms pointing.

[00:08:13] And voices shouting. Pickford catching what he could, and punching what he had to, as the Azteca kept pushing Mexico forward. The clock reached 90 minutes. But that wasn't the end of the story. Eleven added minutes. And for Mexico, that meant one more chance at a miracle. But they still ran, they still closed, and they still threw themselves in front of danger. With one minute to go, a ball came into the England box.

[00:08:43] John Stones turned it towards his own goal. And for a tiny terrible second, the ball seemed to be heading for the corner. It slipped inches wide. England survived again, and the final whistle went. Full time, Mexico 2, England 3. The noise inside the Azteca was loud, only this time it was coming from the England fans.

[00:09:11] Bellingham had given them two shots in two incredible minutes, while Kane had converted from the penalty to make it three. With Pickford strong in goal, and defenders living through a storm, Mexico's players sank to their knees. The storm had delayed the start, but it didn't dampen the atmosphere for England fans.
