[00:00:45] This one is really special. Brazil against Norway, a World Cup knockout match, July 2026. Five-time world champions against a country still writing the biggest football story it had ever known. Based on history, Brazil was supposed to get the win. They had Pelé, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Cafu, Vinny Jr., Neymar, Romario.
[00:01:15] All those World Cup memories that shone in yellow and blue. Brazil didn't just turn up at a World Cup. They arrived with a whole football museum behind them. Norway came with something different. A team that believed. Oh, and Erling Haaland. The match was played at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, in the last 16 of the World Cup.
[00:01:42] The winner would go to the quarter-finals. The loser, home. There was another little piece of history in the air, too. Brazil had never beaten Norway in a senior men's international. At kick-off, Brazil were in their famous colours of yellow and blue. Norway, in their famous red. And they didn't look scared. They kept the ball well and moved it with patience.
[00:02:09] Not just sitting deep and waiting for the oncoming storm. They gave Brazil problems of their own. Norway were careful when they needed to be, and brave when they had to be. They trusted their passes, too. They found Martin Odegaard when they could, and they looked for moments when Haaland could pull away from his marker and turn half-chances into something bigger.
[00:02:31] Brazil had danger, too. Vinicius Junior carried the ball with speed, skipping forward and trying to make defenders turn. Brazil looked for him whenever they wanted the match to open up. Despite all the back-and-forwards, at half-time, a close contest ended goalless. But the second half began with more surprises. Brazil knew that patience was important. More so than urgency.
[00:02:58] Brazil knew that every minute level with Brazil would potentially tip the game in their favour. Then came a huge chance for Brazil. A penalty. Bruno Gimaraes stepped up, and the Brazil fans waited. The Norwegian fans held their breath. A penalty in a World Cup knockout game is more than just a kick. It's a game of cat-and-mouse.
[00:03:23] A psychological test with the goalkeeper on the line, and the striker standing over the ball. Bruno ran up. The shot was saved. And Norway had survived. It gave the Norwegians confidence to believe the night was still open.
[00:03:52] The ball came into the box and found Erling Haaland. He attacked the space just before it closed and found his moment with a header. Peeling off the defender. Goal. Norway won. Brazil 0. The red shirts ran together, and the noise in the stadium changed.
[00:04:22] With just over ten minutes to go, Brazil were behind. Not in a friendly or a group game, this was a World Cup knockout match. And now Brazil had to chase. The yellow shirts pushed forward with urgency, and the passing became quicker. The crowd could feel the old giant waking up. But Norway were energised by Haaland's goal, and he was hungry for more.
[00:04:49] Brazil's problem was simple. But if they pushed too hard, Norway could break. In the 89th minute, Norway moved forward again. The ball found its way into Haaland's path. And for a second, the whole match came down to just him and Alisson, the Brazilian goalkeeper. Instead of a wild swing or a desperate slash at the ball,
[00:05:14] Haaland shifted to find space and finished with the unnerving call of a striker who was ready to take his moment. Low. Powerful. Goal. Brazil 0. Norway 2. Two late goals for the Norwegians, both scored by Erling Haaland. In the space of just ten minutes, Brazil was staring at the edge of defeat.
[00:05:44] Deep into added time, they pushed again, and were awarded a penalty. This time, Neymar, who hadn't scored for his country since 2023, stepped up to take it. The pressure for a man out of form was heavy. Brazil needed a goal quickly, and then another almost straight away. Neymar stepped up, Shuffled. And scored. Brazil 1. Norway 2.
[00:06:16] A little flicker of yellow in the final seconds. For Neymar, it was a huge personal moment. He carried Brazil's hopes for so many years, across so many tournaments, through injuries, comebacks, pressure and expectation. A late World Cup penalty is a lonely place to stand, and he finished with cool. There just wasn't enough time left for a second. Norway held their nerve. And the final whistle came.
[00:06:48] Brazil 1. Norway 2. Brazil were out. Norway. Through to the quarter-finals. A painful ending for Carlo Ancelotti's men. A team full of clear, world-class talent that had been beaten in the last 16. The yellow shirt stood still. Some with hands on hips, some looking down, some praying, others trying to understand how the match had slipped away. For Norway, it was one of the great nights.
[00:07:18] They'd beaten Brazil at a World Cup. Knocking out the five-time champions with discipline, belief and two late goals from one of the most feared strikers in the game. Seven goals in the tournament so far for Haaland put him level for the golden boot. As a World Cup giant fell by the wayside, Norway, led by Erling Haaland, strolled on to the World Cup quarter-finals.
