[00:00:30] You know, if you have your first baby when you're over the age of 35, it's called a Gerry Adams pregnancy. Hello, I'm Will. And I'm Hugh. And this is Legitimate Likes, the podcast where we take a look at some of humanity's most popular fascinations. And we try to work out, are they really worthy of the hype? They may be likes, but are they Legitimate Likes? This week, we're talking about Robin Hood with producers Anya and Michael. We've live shows. It's the first time we are doing live shows on the island of Ireland.

[00:00:59] We've done the Cheerful Earful Festival in London a number of times, three times. But we're coming to Ireland. And I like that we're taking a very cross-border approach. Yeah. Just doing our bit. Oh my God, would we be like, who are the two guys, David Trimble and somebody holding hands? John Hugh. Yeah, it'll be Will and Michael. Okay, so of all the people involved in the peace process, who's everyone on the podcast? Oh, bags to Shastlin.

[00:01:27] Oh, Michael, he was coming in decommissioning arms. Come on, you gotta pick one of the big few. I know. You're Adams, Michael, aren't you? I like a man in the dressing room. No, he's not Jerry. No, are you Jerry Adams on the calendar? Am I not? I think I'm Jerry Adams. I think you are Gerry Adams. I'm Jerry with him. I'm Gerry Adams. So you're Gerry Adams. Will is... Ooh. Will's Tony Blair. No, he's Michael. I think he's Michael McGinnis. Martin McGinnis. Martin McGinnis. Martin McGinnis. Sorry. He's dead.

[00:01:57] He is dead. Unlike Will. No, I think Will is very Blair-y. Michael is Ian Paisley. You've got a lot of very strong conservative opinions on things. Yeah, that's true. I bet you also think that gambling is the devil's buttermilk. Yeah, okay. I can see that. Yeah. Barbermilk. Hugh, who are you? A Hume? Just makes me the heroic John Hume, does it? Can I not be Bill Clinton? You want to be Bill Clinton. Yeah, can I not just show up at the end and take some credit for it? Can I not just do that?

[00:02:26] I mean, I'm sure he did more than that. I think he's done a lot more than that, Michael. I was going to say, who would we all be in the 1916 Resurrection, but none of us would have been in the GPO. We'd have been grumbling Dubliners given out at home, I think. I don't know. I could see you as Constance and Markovitz, you know? Oh, yeah, that's very inventive. Cast me as the one female character. Well, okay, then you could be Sean T. O'Kyalik.

[00:02:52] Will, to be fair, it's hard though to ask you, it's hard to ask anyone, you know, talk to us about these characters because often you have a character and some of the things they do are good. Some of the things they do are bad. Are they on the good side? Are they on the bad side? The good side. The good side. I was trying my best, but I kept mispronouncing so many words. It's very good. What are we talking about? So we're here to talk about Robin Hood.

[00:03:20] Robin Hood, folk hero and the subject of many movies and books over the years and retellings. I was really excited to do this one. I feel like he looms large for the child of the 80s and 90s. So let's get into it. Let's get into our, into our three question quiz. So I think two of the more popular retellings of it are the Disney movie and the Robin Hood Prince of Peace movies. Can you tell me what year they both came out? They didn't come out the same year, but what years did they came out?

[00:03:47] Well, the Disney movie didn't use like footage or animation from the Jungle Book. Yes. Peter, Peter Ustinov played Robin Hood in it. So will the Jungle Book, I think was the Jungle Book 1964. And Peter Ustinov, Peter Ustinov also played Poirot in Death on the Nile, which I feel was like in the 70s.

[00:04:13] So will we say 1974? I think so. That sounds like a good guess. 1973. Oh, that's pretty good. Very good. But, and it was well reasoned. So you'll get marks for doing your work in the show you're working. Yeah. Eight out of 10. Okay. So then Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. So now was this squarely 90s or was this tail end 80s? Like it was a young Alan Rickman. So I had this totally wrong. I thought this was much later than it actually was.

[00:04:42] I think this might even be pre Die Hard maybe. So is Prince of Thieves Kevin Costner? Yes. And Morgan Freeman. And a cameo appearance of Sean Connery. And Christian Slater as well. Christian Slater. What an enigma. He was the heartthrob. He was the, you know, the ladies man. Yeah, but he's also absolutely mental. Yeah. But I feel like now he's the type of person he just looks like a generic person. Right? Oh, he looks worse I think. But whatever that standard.

[00:05:11] But I mean even if you take Christian Slater in the late 1980s. I feel like he's, whatever that standard of beauty was that we were aiming for. That is now not what people are looking for. I mean he wasn't a million miles away from Michael J. Fox. Michael J. Fox was cuter. But they had the same kind of. Same go heck. Yeah. Angles didn't they? Yeah. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. 88. Way off. It was 1991. But I was surprised that I actually thought it was later. I thought this was maybe like 1995. Maybe that kind of thing. Okay. And it holds up pretty well. Looks great. Michael's not made a clip earlier today.

[00:05:41] It looks amazing. I've never seen it either. The clip I saw today looked amazing. It's amazing. It's an amazing film. You're like it holds up really well. I haven't seen it. No, it just looked really fresh and current. But I think a lot of those 90s movies still look amazing. Have you guys seen Jumanji? Recently? Oh, so good. So good. So good! I mean Jurassic Park. Yeah, what a film. Holds up incredibly well. It's also one of the long line of late 80s, early 90 films that had a song tie in. Yes.

[00:06:08] Because it had what everything I do, I do it for you, right? Like why did we not do this anymore? Oh! I knew that was 91. I should have got it. Should have got that. Well here, how about this? If you got a... Okay, I'm going to give you a couple of songs. You try and pick the film. Okay? So, I don't want to miss a thing. What was that? Armageddon. Smashed it. Gangsta's Paradise. Oh! Oh Will, we were talking about Gangsta's Paradise only the other day.

[00:06:34] Yeah, which is not a common point of discussion for Will and Hugh. Did Coolio appear in the film? I actually don't know if he was in the film. He was called Dangerous Minds. Dangerous Minds. Oh! I Believe I Can Fly? Or Kelly's song. Space Jam. Was that Space Jam? Space Jam. That was a Space Jam. That was an amazing film. That is really... We know exactly where my sort of sensibility and intellect lies.

[00:07:02] There was no hesitation of me saying Space Jam. If it's got a cartoon in it, I'll be alright. That's absolutely your oeuvre. Last one. Kiss from a Rose by Seal. Where's that from? Oh! It's a bit of a curveball. Is that that one that had American Beauty with all the rose petals on the cover of the DVD? No, I like where your head's at. No, it's not though. I remember looking at DVD when I was a kid being like, I can't believe that's real. It's a woman lying under all these rose petals. This is so salacious.

[00:07:32] That's an absolute film as well. No, it was Batman Forever guys. Oh! Wow! That is left field. Do you remember that? And there's a whole host of them we didn't mention. Titanic, Wild Wild West, that had a song too. Like this used to be a thing. You used to have your big summer movie and had your big summer song slapped all over it. And why can't we have that anymore? I'm going to say something appalling, right? I think Will Smith's Wild Wild West is actually an okay song. I like it. Okay? I like it. I don't care what you think of me. I enjoy it.

[00:08:02] It's very brave, Vanya, of you to say that. Please leave. Okay, so our second question. So, I don't know how you guys would... I would have described Robin Hill, I was going to say Robin... Robin... Who's the English politician? Blind? Robin Good. Yeah, I'm not saying it'd be. I would have described Robin Hood as an outlaw. But what was he originally in the first kind of ballads and storytelling about Robin Hood? What was his original, I suppose, occupation? A bandit. A yeoman. Was he a soldier?

[00:08:31] Will Hazard. A yeoman. Yeah. Yeah. But what is a yeoman? A yeoman? I think it's... It's a bad sign. Like a middle class sort of like, person who did stuff within the like, fiefdom. Did you have your own kind of militia or something? It's just a bloke on a horse. Yeah, so it was a few things. But it was mostly a historical small landowning farmer. So yeah, I think it was like you weren't quite bottom of the pile. You had a little bit of influence and stuff.

[00:09:01] But I think he's been featured in ballads and stuff, I think back to the 15th century. Like it goes back a long time. But the version that we know now, I don't know if it's exactly what he initially was. I know when the first mention was. The first ever mention was in the 14th century. And someone was saying that someone was singing Robin Hood songs. So it was already within the popular imagination. But this guy that I was listening to a YouTube video, he was saying that because it was popular with like,

[00:09:31] the lower classes, like all the kings and stuff didn't write it down. That was the only way we had recorded documents was all the posh shows liked it. So my third question is I want you to match the animals to the character in the Disney adaptation. That's a great question. So Robin Hood and Maid Mariam, what were they? Absolutely. Stone foxes. Red foxes. Yeah. Or as my friend Ben Pope describes foxes as sexy dogs. I see it.

[00:10:01] Okay. It's true. Little John, what was he? A bear. He was a big balloon. No, Michael. Yeah, he was a bear. Who was he? Friar Tuck. Oh yeah, okay. He was a bear too then, wasn't he? No, he was a badger, I think. A badger, very good. Okay. God, Hugh, this is amazing. Prince John and King Richard? This is an easy one. Lions. Lions, yeah. But King Richard was a proper, proper strong lion and Jerry Adams, proper strong lion. Strong lion. King John was more mealy marked.

[00:10:30] I didn't think you'd be getting so excited about a British king lion, Jerry. Game respect game. You could have solved a lot of problems that earlier, Hugh, if you'd gotten into... Yeah, it's true. You know, broke your piece. Sir Hiss, obviously, was a... A snake. A snake with the voice of Winnie the Pooh. And the Sheriff of Nottingham. It was a wolf for a dog. It was a wolf, yeah. Oh. And then there was also, there was some other creatures, so there was vultures, crocodile,

[00:10:58] rabbits, there was a turtle, there was mice, there was a big hen. An amazing cockroach. Oh, the hen. Yeah, there was. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The hen. Yeah. So, Robin Hood, I mean, Michael, do you want to take us away with your, I mean, do you think the ethics stand the test of time, robbing from the rich to feed the poor? Would you guys do it? What do you think, Michael? I bet you have some blistering thoughts. I mean, guys, you know me, I'm all for the redistribution of wealth, obviously. Do you mean distributing it up the chain? I would always say that.

[00:11:29] Michael's a real trickle up economics guy. No, here's the thing, right? Okay. Robin Hood exists in a feudal system. And in the context of a feudal system, what he's doing is absolutely bonkers, right? It's anarchy. Okay. So the rich guy, the Lord, he needs that money. Okay. He needs that money to pay soldiers, to build bridges, to build windmills, whatever, right? This is like being patronized by Elon Musk on a podcast. No, but these-

[00:11:58] No, he's not stuttering enough. If you take that money and you just distribute to these individual smallholders, it's just going to fritter it away, right? It's not going to make a difference. On food, on shelter, on their families. No. Also, when you say fritter it away, where do you think it goes? They're not just going to eat the money. They'll give it to other people within the economic system. Well, exactly. And you know what happens when you do that? Do you know what the impact of all this fiscal stimulus would be? It would be inflation, right? What?

[00:12:27] You give all this money to these people. Fiscal stimulus is a horrible place. Yeah, sure, they'll go and buy bread. But then the next day, the price of bread goes up and the guy down the street can't afford it. And then suddenly Robin Hood's going to be the bad guy. Do you just want to thin out, so let all of them die and then there'll be bridges and windmills for the Lord to dance around in on his own? No. And his soldiers. Look, Robin Hood and all the people of Nottingham can have justifiable- Why did you say Nottingham like an American tourist? Nottingham.

[00:12:57] We're going to Edinburgh. We're going to Nottingham, Donegal. But no, they have justifiable- Lechester. Lechester. I'm not defending what the sheriff or what the king- What's the king? King John? No, you are, I think. No, I'm not. You're Donbari government minister. I'm not. I'm not. First thing in the morning. What I'm saying is, if you want to argue with them how that money should be spent, then do so. But just spraying it around, just stealing and spraying around, that's anarchy. That's not going to-

[00:13:26] That's going to get you one day of a sugar rush in the system. Would you steal to feed your family, Michael? Uh, yeah. I have to say yes, don't you really? God, you weren't sure about that. You have to say yes, don't you? Yeah, you do. So do you mean if I, for the sake of my word, I break into Elon Musk's house? No. It would be more like you breaking into the central bank. Right? Or- But how? But how? Because it's the, he's stealing from the Exchequer. That's what he's doing. This is the public purse.

[00:13:53] Whether, whether you guys want to recognize this or not, that's what he's doing. Yeah, but, but the, the public purse is doing terrible things. It's, it's unfairly taxing all the little animals. And this is where Robin Hood and I have common, this is where we, where we're, where we're on common ground, right? But his approach of just taking it and slinging it around isn't going to help anyone in the long run. You see, Michael, you're using the kind of language, you're using the term slinging it around. Yeah. Frittery. To make it sound like what he's doing is nothing.

[00:14:22] Whereas he's going in and giving a very tired, leave willy nilly to have his say in just a second when I'm done. Okay? I will, thank you. And I'd prefer if you called me William Nillium, if I'm honest. But he's going in and giving a little coin to an old mother rabbit. That's not frittering it away, that's not slinging it around. And where are all the rest of those jewels that he's, that he's, that he's stealing? Where are they going to? The jewels. There's something about jewels getting, does someone swallow jewels at some point? I only know the Disney movie.

[00:14:52] Let's just make that very clear. But you very much changed the terms of the argument there, Michael. You're now accusing him of corruption and cycling a bit off. No I'm not, I'm not. I'm just saying that the amount of wealth that he is, that he is taking from the central purse. The worst thing about this is, Michael, that if you met him at a party you would be all over him like a rash. Robin Hood? Yeah, you'd want to be near the heat. You'd want to go where the action was. You'd be all over him. And there wouldn't be any of this. You think he's cool?

[00:15:19] I do think he's cool, but I think he's a bit misguided, you know? So would you be suggesting that he votes in? What should he do? I think Robin Hood, I think Robin Hood could, I mean he should run for office, you know? But he won't get in, Michael. This is the problem. It's a closed system. He's not getting let in. Yeah. But his solution to it isn't going to help anyone either. But it is helping people though. It is helping people. In the very short run. Very short run, you know? Yeah, but people like being helped in the short run. So you tell me if I needed food, you'd be like, you just have to wait for it to trickle down.

[00:15:49] If you and Will needed food and I gave you the money and Will didn't have it, you know? I'd be fine with that. Yeah, okay. I can see from your perspective. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Michael, which of the other hosts on this podcast would you give a kidney to? I would absolutely love to give out a, to give out, to give a, to be an organ donor. I'd love to do it. Anyone can have any questions. That's not the question. Pick one. I give one. We all need one. He's such a politician. I'd love to be an organ donor.

[00:16:19] But we all need one, Michael. You've only got one to give. Or if you want to die, you can take two. That's tough. That is tough now. Who are you killing? No, you'd have to, you'd have to do rock, paper, scissors. No, because I always play rock. So you know, the others know what I'm going to do there. Yeah, nothing beats rock. Nothing beats rock. I think it would have to be you on your wheel. I think that's the order you'd do it in. Why is that? Yeah, why? I think that's the order in which he likes us all.

[00:16:47] No, I think he'd pick you, Will, because... I'm the coolest. He'd think it was fairer. Maybe it'd be the person I met first. Maybe that's the easiest way. And I don't know who that is though. It's you. Is it? I don't know. Or it's you. I'd say... I don't know. I'd say it was close. I mean, it was a matter of days, I'd say. Like... Oh my God, we'd have to go back through the records. Yeah, we would. Wouldn't we? We would, yeah. Yeah. This is mind-blowing.

[00:17:13] Is there a universe where I knew you, Michael, and we did not know unto Will, to Hugh? He didn't... He had not revealed it himself that there was these time... And I knew Hugh, but you didn't know Michael. That's crazy. That's crazy to me. Yeah. Now, I'm going to put my hand up as the listener here and be like, that doesn't seem crazy in any way. No, but to me, they're just one big blob. You get one, you get the other one. Do you know what I mean? It's a matter to me. Go back and listen to our previous episode where we talk about the fat controller. But you're... I think you're just basically like...

[00:17:42] A package of you. I just can't... A package of you. I can't conceive... And I can't conceive a world where I knew of you, but you did not know. Onto you. That's crazy. I think I'm getting the kidney. I think I'm getting the kidney. I think I'd be able to butter you up more and I'd be able to convince you more that I deserved it. And I'd cry if I had to try getting a tear out of the other two. I think Michael would put you to the bottom of the list because of you trying to convince him. Yeah. I'd play aloof. I wouldn't appreciate that gamesmanship. I don't want the kidney. I wouldn't appreciate that. I think Michael would say,

[00:18:11] I won't give you the kidney because I just fresher away my kidney on you, then the price of kidneys is going to increase enormously. Would that be the fairest thing if I kept it from myself? Not to give it to anybody. Put it in the public purse. Well, that is what your economic system says is that it would be more beneficial for the podcast as a whole if you kept both kidneys and one or all of us died. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah. So I thought you would have some interesting. Yeah. What I'm saying is Robin Hood, he should put down the bow and arrow and he should put forth a fully funded fiscal proposal. Yeah.

[00:18:41] Michael, again, though, he's living in a corrupt monarchy, though. You're talking about this as though he's living in this ideal electable system, even though first you said he lived in a feudal system. So not elected. So you're changing your tune. What would you have said to the baby rabbit? Feudal system relies on the relies on layers of consent as well, you know, and like King John is in the background as well. Or King. Who's the good one? King Richard. King Richard. He's imprisoned in Vienna. Michael. Is that where he was? Yeah. Was he on the Crusades? No, was he not being held for ransom?

[00:19:11] Yeah. You're Sir Hiss. Me? You are Sir Hiss, Michael. Well, I actually. So we went back to the personality test episode. We did the Myers-Briggs and I checked today who has, who shares which personality type of character. So I think Will is without a shadow of a doubt, little John. But I think you might be as well, Anya. No. Really? Will and I have the same personality type, if you just remember. No, we're ENFPs. Do you know who's a classic ENFP? Me, Marion.

[00:19:41] Robin. Frickin' Hut. Okay. Suck it losers. Okay? Right? And that totally tracks. We're cheerful. We're funny. We wouldn't be getting bogged down by Michael's fiscal stuff. We'd just be doing what we thought was right because we thought, you know, I think we would be impulsive. So you two didn't naturally fit into one. But when I probed a little more. F in JFK is that for frickin' as well, is it? John frickin' Kennedy. Exactly. Okay. Kentucky frickin' chicken. That works very well.

[00:20:10] Ultimate frickin' championship. Hugh, your most likely one is Maid Marion. I'll take it. Your gentle, compassionate value authenticity. And you don't seek the spotlight, but you stand up for what you believe in. Now, there wasn't many for you, Michael. But the closest one that you had. Get this a lot. Was... Sheriff of Nottingham, surely. There weren't many strong versions of you.

[00:20:39] Now, let's just remind people you're an INTJ, which is shared by Elon Musk. Okay. Littlefinger. No, also Michelle Obama. That's not even a real person, Littlefinger. That's not fair. But you're the most like Prince John. Is he the good one? Yeah. Strategic. No. No. Strategic and power focused. He's also too emotional and insecure and impulsive to be a classic INTJ. So that's it. You don't even feature. You don't even feature in the film. But I... Well, I think it's pretty cool that we get the cool one. Yeah. I did think I was more Little John, but yeah.

[00:21:09] Is there any chance that Robin Hood existed? No. No. He's pure folklore. I don't think so. I think it's pure folklore. Yeah. Yeah. There's like Robin... Robin Hood was quite a common name, apparently. But there's just no way of knowing. I feel there probably was outlaws and kind of highway men and stuff. And it, you know, I'd say there are lots... There are in a way... Are we all Robin Hood? You know? Wow. I mean, they're more real-win though, but...

[00:21:38] Interesting you say Robin Hood was a common name. Have you ever heard of that thing? The Tiffany Paradox? So this is where... Anyone heard of this? You're gone very diary of a CEO there. Anyone heard of this? No, this is where names are much older than they're perceived to be. So Tiffany, I guess, is kind of perceived as like a... An 80s old. An 80s old. Valley girl type name or something. Yeah. But actually it's an ancient name. And so if you were writing a book set in the 6th century and you had your Tiffany in there, people are like scoffing at it. But actually, that would be entirely reasonable of you.

[00:22:09] Yeah. There was a Beyonce in the Bible, I think, wasn't there? Really? Well, it would make sense because... No. No. What? No, there wasn't. Okay, I thought there was. I fell for that old gliding sinker. I don't know, I guess maybe. This is a reading from the prophet Beyonce. Yeah, but there's so much EGAB, Michael, you know this. EGAB, beget, gonads, beget... You know, like, there's an awful lot of that. Like if you threw Beyonce in there, I'd be like, well, I guess.

[00:22:38] A lot of names are, you know, Michael, you have a name from scripture. Thank you. Yeah, yeah. Michael, do you not? Did my... Unto... I can't use unto... The name given unto me. Yeah, yes. Unto myself. Unto... It is a... I was pleased with those characters anyway. Michael, you're not even in it, but Will, I think you are 100% Robin Hood. Oh, if anyone on this podcast was going to rob from the rich and give to the poor, it would be me. It's Hugh, and you would look very... I think you could play Robin Hood. Yeah. And get the look. Yeah.

[00:23:08] God, Hugh, you're very dizzy ass there. Wow. I was actually in an acting... I was at an acting job this morning. I was doing a read through for something with Dawn French. Very funny. No way. But that was cool. She was nice. But the main thing that I wanted to tell you guys... Well, yeah. Get ready. I'm about to dig it up and show you my lead. Oh, wow. Okay. I was sitting next to a guy.

[00:23:33] He was having a conversation with someone and they were talking about lunch because we were getting lunch and she was like, oh, I wonder what the dessert's going to be. I hope it's something like chocolate mousse or like panettone or something. I was hoping you were going to say cherry chocolate orange. Oh, imagine. But his response, I thought you guys would absolutely love his response. Yeah. He went, oh, no, no, no, no. I don't do wobbly puds. That's how I think British people are all the time. This doesn't surprise me at all. I knew that's what they were at when we weren't listening.

[00:24:01] You know English people would be talking about, like, would there be a hot pudding with the buffet? Yeah. Or is this a cold pudding on Tuesdays? Yeah, yeah. We don't do pud on Wednesdays, you know? So, with the Disney movie, was that your favourite incarnation of Robin Hood? Indeed, this has been the only incarnation of Robin Hood that you've really engaged with. That's great. Yeah, it's the main one. I remember we had it on VHS and I absolutely adored it. It was in the sort of, we only had a couple of VHSs.

[00:24:30] It was in the rotation of always watching Robin Hood. It was great. Do you remember when it's the birthday? It's the little rabbit's birthday and he has his few coins. That was the saddest thing I had ever seen. Then he's like, how old are you? I'm seven going on eight, even though it's his birthday. So he's only just turned seven. What a great joke. And then the sheriff in Nottingham comes in and plinks a coin in and then the others bounce up, which is an amazing trick. And then grabs them all. That'd be Michael. And Robin Hood comes in as an old beggar.

[00:24:59] And then he takes off his hood and he's like, it is I, Robin! Or whatever. It's great. So good. I love the song. Not in Nottingham. Every town. Has its ups and downs. Sometimes the ups. Outnumber the downs. But not in Nottingham. Yeah. The mouse with the little crumbs trying to get the little crumbs.

[00:25:28] Oh, my God. It was so emotionally effective. Michael, you would look at those poor children and you'd be saying, you know, well, I mean, you'd be trying to tell them a PowerPoint. I'm taking away this bread to protect you from inflation. No. No. You might die of starvation, but the value of your currency globally will remain far more stable. Why did you go full Simon Harris there? Take the boats. Take the planes. Take our hand. Take the bread from the mouse's hand.

[00:25:59] And he was he was a Michael Collins type, right? That's who he was. Did you know Simon Harris is? I guess why would you? I think I talked about this, but when I was growing up, I feel like my parents earlier was coming up in the old crunches. Oh, yeah. Would feature a lot in conversation. But where did he go? Why does no one talk about it anymore? Because I feel like he was like making up huge volume of conversation. Yeah. And for adults in my, maybe I just like hearing them say crunches. He had a great name and a great beard. I think that was what did it. Crunches.

[00:26:26] I think I remember we were going to the wax museum when I was small and my parents like there's crunches de rosa. Crunches de rosa. Crunches de rosa. Not in the wax museum. He was in the, he was walking by. Say it. Crunches de rosa. Crunches. Crunches. Crunches. What on earth? Who is this guy? Crunches. This is like when I found out. Look him up there, Will. Oh, this is why I. He won't be able to spell it. How is he going to look that up? No, there's no way. How do you think you spell it?

[00:26:56] I, Pruncious. I didn't know how you spelled it. Uh, P or U N C H I A S. I mean, you'll probably find him with that. No. It's P or O I N S I A S. Crunches de rosa. God. He does have a great beard. He does. Always do. Crunches de rosa. But am I right? That was just a name you heard more. Well, I guess that would make sense. Why would people be talking about it right now? But it's like, who was that guy who used to sing Colors of the Wind? Oh.

[00:27:27] Charles Lansbury? Is that his name? Was that Charlie Lansbury? What color is the wind? Charlie Lansbury. Why don't you hear about him anymore? What happened to him? Is that, is that, did he sing that song? I don't even know if he sang that song. I'm just naming, I'm just naming assorted things that I think in the 90s that just kind of got left there and I want them back. Yeah. Yeah. Like Kosovo. Kenny G. You heard a lot about him. I think the Serbs were on Kosovo back as well. Slobodan. Slobodan Milošević.

[00:27:56] Slobodan Milošević. We just got to forget the guy. Who was the guy who died in the car accident in Russia? Princess Diana. Liam, Liam Lawler? Oh, Liam Lawler. Why don't we hear about that anymore? I mean, he died. Yeah. I don't know. I just think. Democratic left on you. The Christian, the, no, who are the other ones? The Mary Harney's one. What's that? The progressive Democrats. The progressive Democrats. Yeah.

[00:28:24] Do you know what I think I've just reverse engineered his reeling in the years? I was about to be like, wouldn't it be great if there was a way that we could relive these memories? With U2 songs over them. Yeah. Someone should do an episode on the 90s. Every episode would be on the 90s if I had my way. Yeah. So I was about to ask you guys, how would you cast a new version? But I didn't realize there was a new version in 2010. Not of the Disney, but a new Robin Hood. I haven't seen it. Russell Crowe, right? Yeah. It was sort of in the, it was in the gritty reboot kind of vein, wasn't it?

[00:28:54] Was it just called Robin or Hood or something? No, it was called Robin Hood. It was a Ridley, Ridley Scott Endeavour, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Mark Strong. Mark Strong. Was he Sheriff of Nottingham? It's funny. William Hurt, Mark Strong. It just sounds like descriptions of the cast. Mark Strong was Godfrey, an English knight in turncoat working for the French. Oh yeah. That makes sense. Yeah. Turncoat is a nice phrase. I'd love to use the word, the phrase turncoat more. It's great, isn't it? Dirty turncoat.

[00:29:24] Yeah. What about Robin Hood Men in Tights? Robin Hood Men in Tights, 1993. And it's like one of those funny films, you know? It's good. But is it sort of a young Frankenstein? Yes, it is. It's good stuff. It's good stuff. Great movie, young Frankenstein. Robin Hood Men in Tights is an absolute banger of a film. So yeah. It's 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. Yeah. Absolute banger. Dave Chappelle plays a character called Achoo in it.

[00:29:53] I mean, everything you're saying about it being an amazing film, Michael. Do you think if it was made now, what's more likely to happen is that it would be a series that would go on for like eight seasons? Yeah. Yeah. You have the opportunity to just swap the genders there because Robin could be a woman's name and Marion. I mean, John Wayne's name was Marion. So, you know. He could have been born in the Marion year. Could have been born in the Marion year. Exactly. Or born on the Feast of the Assumption. Yeah.

[00:30:20] Or you could have a Eukaria born during the Eucharistic convention. Or you could be called April if you were born in April. Very good, Will. Thank you. Starts with Snake. Nullig if you're born at Christmas. Or Crunchius if your parents liked Crunchies. It's such a good name, isn't it? But it's like when I discovered the word My Waddy the other day. Did you only discover that last week when we were here? Yes. I had never heard of My Waddy. Sorry, is My Waddy just an Irish thing?

[00:30:51] I think this is the biggest cultural gap we've ever had. So is yours always Robinson's, is it? No, no, no. They say squash. They just say squash. That's a crazy thing to say. And then I interrogated the English version, which is squash. Which is absolutely horrible. It's very close to squishy puds. Wobbly puds. Yours must be branded though, right? No, squash is... Everything is squash. But My Waddy is a brand. This is insane. No, I know. But like, if you're going and buying some squash...

[00:31:21] Oh, the most common one would be Robinson's. But I grew up on Sainsbury's high juice. Explains a lot. Did you have high juice? What's high juice? When we were walking down mines, we'd come up out of the shaft. It was actually just water, but it was called high juice because we weren't low anymore because we'd come out of the mine. So it was a high juice. It was like... It was squash. I think it was sort of like double concentrate.

[00:31:50] It was a thicker, syrupy-er squash. Yeah. And it was called high juice. We used to drink syrup straight from mine. Thick mine syrup that we called squash. Because if you stayed down in the mine while you were drinking it, there was a risk you'd get squashed. High juice is a type of concentrated fruit squash containing 50% or more real fruit juice. Unlike standard squash, which contains 10 to 30%. Wow. Did you guys not know about juice? Which is thrillingly 100% juice.

[00:32:23] Like squash is just... I always think like... I'm not averse to squash from time to time, but like nobody likes it. Like it's clearly the shittest drink. Do you know what I mean? Yeah. Like nobody likes this. Nobody wants this. It's like a ghost of juice. It's an emergency cupboard item. Like if you've got absolutely nothing else and you need something with a bit of flavor, there's always a bottle of squash that hasn't gone off somewhere. You know? There was a big thing in my family because my dad came to stay at my house when my wife and I were away.

[00:32:51] He stayed here for a day and then left. And he came back home and I think it was a Christmas dinner or something. He put his cutlery down. He said, I went to stay at Will's house. And would you believe it? No squash. And everyone was like, Bigger thing in England. Bigger thing in England. 100%. I was like, are we a squash family? We're a squash family. My parents like lime cordials. They think that's nice and sparkling water or something. But I don't think you'd get many people in Ireland. Do you know?

[00:33:18] I had dinner in a pub last week and for the first time I'd say in... You got a blackcurrant? 12 years I got a pint of blackcurrant and water. Yeah. What made you do that? I don't know what it was. I just thought, why not? It's not great. Like, it's like, because if you really were going to have something like that, would you not just have a juice or a mineral? Yeah. Do you know what I mean? A mineral now. You sound like a dentist in the 90s, aren't you? Yeah, we got minerals, we got cordials, we got high juices knocking around. Cordial sounds amazing. It does.

[00:33:45] It sounds like something you'd be given in a lot of lorry and by an elven princess. Do you know what's unbelievable? When you go to France on holiday and they have syrups. Syrups? Syrups de grenadine. Unbelievable. It's not nice though, Will. It's not that nice. And the syrups de moth. I mean, who wants a mint drink? Hugely. Oh. I always wondered who was drinking that. Do you know what? One of the best alcohols in the world is creme de moth. That stuff's crazy.

[00:34:15] You're just drinking mouthwash. It's delicious with a Baileys. Oh. A mint Baileys. That's a mint crisp in your mouth. Yeah. Unbelievable. As opposed to the other places you have a mint crisp. Yeah. It's like a mint crisp up your ass. What is that? You said it was like a mint crisp in your mouth. You know? It's so funny. When I have a bit of squash, it's like juice in the mouth. When we came up from mines.

[00:34:43] When I was like nine or something, I stayed at James Broadhead's house. Right? Sorry. What's his name? James Broadhead. Okay. And you're just happy to say that. Oh. What? Who is your guy? Crumbles de Rossi. Like... Sorry. I just don't remind you last evening we had Stephen Golf French. Morgan Golf French. I'll have you know. Morgan Golf French. You leave Morgan Golf French alone, he's an angel. Which begs the question, was it always double borrowed or was one parent golf?

[00:35:12] And the other was French? And they said we won't call him like Hugh French, we'll call him Hugh Golf French. A Frenchman married a VW. That's what happened. I wouldn't put a pass to them. I don't even know. That's not even a mysterious type. James Broadhead's family went to church. So I got taken to like the youth Sunday club. Here we go. Sorry, why were you there? Because I was hanging out with them on a Sunday and that's the activity they were taking us to do on the Sunday. And at the Sunday school, it was like really cool. It was like in like a little youth center.

[00:35:41] And then I had to do a competition where we had to drink like a jug of blackcurrant squash as fast as we could out of a straw. And I won. Fun. Interesting because you've got a straw. So that's all about the power of the suck, isn't it? That's what the whole sermon was based on the power of the suck. Yeah. Do you remember when we were in college, there was the Iron Stumble competition, which was to eat disgusting foods. But then one other society had a good eating room, which was to drink milk. But then another society didn't think it true.

[00:36:09] It had a pizza eating competition, but it ended up just being like 10 people kind of eating lunch. Yeah. Because the way the guy framed it, he was like, so what you can do lads, right? What you can do for this competition is you have to come up and you have to eat as much pizza as you can. Right. And whoever eats the most pizza wins. Now, if you have enough, it's okay. Like you can just stop and head off. You know, like he was just, it was, it was a real, whereas the Iron Stomach was like, we will kill you. Well, the Iron Stomach, right? They used to have to, I don't know how they were allowed to run this.

[00:36:38] They would have to have like a tarp and kind of a vomit trench. Yeah. And then like, this was on a massive stage. This was, I do feel like the Iron Stomach is like one of the most extreme things I've seen happen. And I, and I don't think it happened before. There was like a 10 year period where this thing happened. It didn't happen before or after. It was the height of Celtic, it was, it was the last days of the, the last war of the Celtic Tiger. So, Will, Will, it was like first, first round is like shot sour milk. Drink beer through the sock of the other person.

[00:37:06] Well, I think, I think a beer, you had to have a beer between every round as well. Didn't you? Yeah. And there was like eat an entire slab of Kerrygold. Yeah. And then, yeah, like we, it was that swap socks and drink beer out of it. And infamously a goldfish as well. That was, which is cool. Yeah. It was, it was, it was messed up. It was real like frat hazing stuff. And then like they'd, they'd all projectile vomit into this big trough. That's when you were out. And there was, there was a famed, a famed multi-time winner of this competition who we

[00:37:34] knew very well, but who then as a, as an extra badge of honor used because they'd vomit all over themselves and they'd occasionally fall into the trough of vomit. Yeah. And, but, but as an extra badge of honor, he used to then take the clothes that he had worn, vacuum pack them and take them out again the following year to wear them again. And they were just rags, disintegrating rags. The kind of person who does that, but also has the access to a vac pack is a very interesting person.

[00:38:03] And Will, for context, there were probably 2,000 people at any one point in time watching this. Like it was an enormous baying spectacle. Yeah. It was the closest to, to being in ancient Rome. I really think that was what it was. It was. It was. Will we do a, a redo of this? I would be on for the pizza, the pizza, the milk. Should we all just have a pizza? Yeah. But the pizza one was, Hugh, I think you would have happily, yeah, Hugh and I, Michael and I worked security at these events over time. And Hugh and I, we were always getting in trouble, weren't we?

[00:38:33] We were not paying attention to the love. Not doing any work. Yeah. I did a bit of my own eye and stomach competition last night. Cause I had like three beers and then I came home and you know that chili crisp, uh, like Laugan chili oil, crispy chili stuff. I put that, a bunch of that, uh, with mixed it with some cream cheese and ate it like a yogurt. My tummy was not happy with me this morning. Sounds totally gross. When I was sitting next to Dawn French trying to read a script and listening to a man talking about his wobbly puds.

[00:39:01] I had some wobbly puds that I was making myself. I'd say so. Guys, I'll say one thing for Robin Hood. He has a fun hat, right? It's a fun hat. You don't see that hat on anyone else. It's a great look. It's a great look. It's got, it's, it's kind of ridged at the top, like a, what, like a trilby, I guess. And then it comes to, it comes to a, it comes, but it comes to a point. It's like a fedora and a baseball cap had a baby.

[00:39:28] And then he's got a slick ass feather with some, to add some character at the top. It's cool. It's a cool hat. It looks a bit like a napkin in a fancy hotel. Over the years. Like if I was buying ankle boots for winter, I'd often be thinking, would Robin Hood wear these? I think he has natty taste in his little autumnal boots. He does. And I like the colour scheme. Yeah, he does. It's a great look. What do you think about the Merry Men? Is this like, is it a cult of personality? Would you've enjoyed like sort of just, well, Michael, you'd have hated it because you'd have been given out about the, the fiscal problems. Yeah.

[00:39:57] I like, I'd say they had the crack, didn't they? I mean, Friar Tuck, he was always fun too. It's always fun when you see a man of the cloth take up arms, you know, like Aramis and the Musketeers. Like that's always a fun juxtaposition. That's a real, I don't want to say kink for you, but it does seem to go up a lot. It's always fun. You know, when there's like a priest getting, getting, you know, getting, fighting, you know? Go on. You know, it is though. It always is, you know? Getting all righteous. A man of the cloth. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:40:24] The word Tuck and man of the cloth being that close together really makes me think you've got, you're interested in something different. Michael, what percent, like how likely is it that you would become a priest or a deacon? Well, here's a question. I'm going to ask this to you. Let me answer your question. What a question. I'm going to ask this to you. I think that of our generation, I would say most Irish men as teenagers vaguely consider being priests, right? Nope. Nope. Never. As teenagers.

[00:40:54] That's real only child. Not even like, I mean, when you were 10. Well, I thought it. So everyone else thought it. When I was in primary school, I did sort of briefly have melodramatic thoughts with no real depth of being a nun. But only because I was in a primary school with nuns and you were like, I guess. I- And also some of it looked okay. I don't think being a nun would suit you. There. I said it. No, I didn't. I didn't. I didn't pursue it, Michael. Why do you think that, Michael? I don't know.

[00:41:23] I feel like you've got a lot of energy. I don't know if a convent could contain that, you know? Hmm. Giving a lot, bringing a lot of heat to the situation. Yeah. So how seriously did you consider bringing a priest? Not seriously at all. But I think it's just one of the very few kind of career paths that you're exposed to. Were you ever worried? Sorry. I think it was an anxiety for me because you know the way in primary school you'd hear about people getting the call? And I was like, oh my God, what if I get the call? And you just have to heat it even though I don't want the call. It's like jury duty. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:41:53] What if I'm just summoned? Will. Will, you definitely thought about it. You definitely thought about it. No, I didn't think about anything in advance ever. Okay. He also didn't grow up religious. Yeah. But he became religious. He became. Ah yeah, but not in a priesthood system though. The most religious I was was when I was at James Broadhead's Sunday school. And then I did consider becoming a professional sucker, but that was as far as I got. Yeah. Yeah. So.

[00:42:21] Will, is Robin Hood a legitimate like? Yeah. I think nostalgia is doing a lot of heavy lifting, but cool. Robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. That surely we're rife for a remake. Right? Yeah, that's true. Like surely now is exactly the time. Like Gary Stevenson could play Robin Hood. You could play Robin Hood, Will. I'd rather it was me. Will, you're the perfect fit for Robin Hood.

[00:42:48] I'll say, whatever you want to say about Gary Stevenson, I think I'm a better actor than him. Yeah. I don't think that's a rude thing to say. Agreed. Like I'm the best actor on the podcast. Uh, I don't know. No, as I said that I didn't believe it myself. Loved the film. I think it's a cool character. Is Luigi Mangione a Robin Hood figure? The guy who killed the insurance executive? No, he's definitely not. No? No. No? What do you think of him, Michael?

[00:43:16] Oh, I guess he didn't rob anyone. Well, like, I mean, if true, he's a murderer, right? So, I mean... But he's so pretty. So, uh, yeah. Michael, once again, if you had the chance to get close to him, you're a bit like the way Trump is with Mom and Danny. You just wouldn't be able to get away from the heat. No, I don't... No. You'd want to vibrate him. You'd want to be... No, I wouldn't. I wouldn't. You'd ask him to take his top off. He'd go home and then you'd call the police. No. No, I'm good. I'm good for Luigi.

[00:43:46] I'm good for Luigi. I think Robin Hood's a legitimate like... I think Michael's economic system from earlier was stupid and it... Sometimes when people explain economics, I'm like, I don't really understand them. And then he didn't explain it very well and backed out of all the actual arguments we had against it. So I think Michael's wrong. And I think we should all Robin Hood Michael. Wow. What's that mean? I don't know if I like that or not. Maybe... We're gonna steal all your things. Of course you're not gonna like it. And we're gonna redistribute them around Dublin.

[00:44:14] Yeah, I mean, it's definitely a legitimate like... It's such a cool character. Arguably one of the greatest characters, I would say, in folklore. And the Disney film is amazing. So, yeah. I would also like to give a little shout out to... Does anyone know the Dennis Moore sketch from Monty Python? It's very good. You should check it out. Anyone who says something like that in a little known Monty Python sketch, you're giving real like serious English actor. Like Benedict Cumberbatch,

[00:44:41] what really got me into comic roles was this Monty Python sketch about... What do you call it? Dennis Moore. Dennis Moore. Highly recommend it. Dennis Moore sounds like somebody you were in school with. It does. Yeah. He was really good at GAA. He was the second back half. I don't mind a good GAA. I think you're thinking of a pantomime horse. Thank you for listening to Legitimate Likes. Robin Hood is officially a Legitimate like so it can remain in the world. Go out there, rob a rich person, give it to a poor person. Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen.

[00:45:11] Thank you, Michael, for producing. Thank you, Ornia, for actually producing. Michael, you were just here. Like and subscribe. Come see us on the 1st and the 8th of November where we will have a tarpaulin on the floor, vomit everywhere, and we'll be eating cockles and mussels alive alive-o. See you next time for another episode of this. Love you, bye. Goodbye. Bye.
